You useago when you are referring to past time. For example, if something happened one yearago, it is one year since it happened. If it happened a long timeago, it is a long time since it happened.

adv.(副词)

ago, before: 这两个词都可表示“从前”。其区别是：
1.ago一般只作副词; 而before除作副词外,还可用作连词、介词。
2.ago总是与表示时间的名词或形容词连用,不单独使用; 而before可以单独使用。
3.ago用于从现在算起的某段时间从前,和一般过去时连用,不用现在完成时。而before用于从过去某时起若干时间以前的场合,动词需用过去完成时。例如：
I left school three years ago.
我三年前离开了学校。
He said he had finished the job three days before.

ago, for: 这两个词都表示时间。但含义不同:ago说明某事发生在过去的某一时间,而for则指动作或状态延续了多长时间。试比较：
