ago, before

这两个词都可表示“从前”。其区别是：

1.ago一般只作副词; 而before除作副词外,还可用作连词、介词。

2.ago总是与表示时间的名词或形容词连用,不单独使用; 而before可以单独使用。

3.ago用于从现在算起的某段时间从前,和一般过去时连用,不用现在完成时。而before用于从过去某时起若干时间以前的场合,动词需用过去完成时。例如：

I left school three years ago.

我三年前离开了学校。

He said he had finished the job three days before.

他说他在三天前就完成了这项工作。

I told you before.

我以前告诉过你。

以前我从来未见过那本书。

［误］ I never saw that book ago.

［正］ I never saw that book before.

ago, for

这两个词都表示时间。但含义不同:ago说明某事发生在过去的某一时间,而for则指动作或状态延续了多长时间。试比较：

The old woman died two days ago.

那老太太两天前去世了。

The old woman was ill for three years before she died.

那老太太病了三年后,去世了。

ago, early

两者都可表达“某时之前若干时间”。其区别在于:如果是从现在起向过去推算,用表示时间度量的短语加ago,并与动词的一般过去时连用; 如果表示从过去时刻向更深远的过去推算,则用earlier,并常与动词的过去完成时连用。例如:

Stirring scene from the film still sticks in my mind, though I saw it several years ago.虽然这部影片我是几年前看的,但那激动人心的场面仍然印在我的脑海里。

Four days earlier his foot had been bitten by a poisonous snake.4天前他的脚被毒蛇咬了一下。

ago，before

这两个副词均含“……以前”之意。

ago指从现在起往前推算一段时间，始终置于所修饰的词之后，与一般过去时连用。

before或指从过去某一时间起向前推算的若干时间的以前，通常与过去完成时连用；或泛指以前，并不具体指若干时间以前，可使用现在完成的或过去时；还可指从将来某一时间起的若干时间以前。
