Youmustselectafileorfolderbeforeyoucanuseamenucommandonit.Whenyouselecta file or folder, its name is highlighted. The folder icon on UNIX and Windows NT systemsdenotes a directory. The plus sign (+) or the circle (o) denotes that you can click to expandthe folder.

To select a single file or folder, click on a file or folder in the tree display.
Selecting Multiple Files or Folders
Selectingmultiplefilescanbeusefulifyouwanttomoveagroupoffilestoafolderorifyouwant to delete many files at once.
To select multiple contiguous files or folders,1.Click on the first file you want in the selection.
2.PressandholdtheSHIFTkeywhileyouclickthenameofthelastfileyouwanttoselect.The selected items are highlighted.

Toselectmultiplenoncontiguousfiles,pressandholdtheCTRLkeywhileyouclickthename of each file you want to select.
Cancelling One or More Selections
You can cancel one or all of your selections.

To cancel a single selection, click a different item.You can also click theEdit – Deselect All command.

To remove items from a multiple selection, press and hold theCTRL key while you clickthe files or folders you want to remove.
To cancel all of the selections, click theEdit – Deselect All command or click adifferent item.

Expanding Folders
The file manager lets you expand a folder to display all its files and subdirectories. A folderwithacircleonUNIXmachinesora(+or-)signonWindowsNTmachinesindicatesthatthedirectory can have one or more files or folders.To expand a directory,
1.Click the folder you want to expand.2.Click the File – Expandcommand.
The tree displays all the files and folders in that directory.

Cadence File Manager ReferenceUsing the Cadence File ManagerYou can also click the circle with a short thick line on the right on UNIX systems or theplus (+) sign on NT systems next to the name of the folder you want to expand.
Note:Theiconisdifferentforanexpandedandcollapsedfolder.Ifyouclickonaplus(+)signoracirclewithashortthicklineonththeright,ifafolderisempty,onUNIXsystems,thecircledisappears and on NT systems the plus sign (+) sign disappears.
Changing the Expansion Directory
TheexpansiondirectoryisthetopleveldirectorythatappearsintheDirectoryfield.Itshowsthefullpathofthefolderyouareviewing.Onlyonedirectoryisdisplayedatatime.Therootdirectory path in theDirectoryfield begins with a (/) on UNIX machines and with a drivename (c: \\) on Windows NT machines.
The default expansion directory is the directory in which the file manager or the applicationusing the file manager component is started.
To move up one directory (above the current expansion directory),1.Click the down arrow in theDirectoryfield.

2.Select a directory from the drop-down menu.
You can also type the path to the directory you want and pressReturn.
The tree displays the new files and folders, and theDirectory field displays the newdirectory name.
Expanding in Place
Use theFile – Expand in Placecommand to change the expansion directory to a folderselectedfromthetreedisplay.Intheexampleonthepreviouspage,thedirectorythatappearsin theDirectory field is the expansion root directory.To change the expansion directory from the tree display,
1.Inthetreedisplay,selectthefolderinwhichyouwanttomakeyourexpansiondirectory.2.Click theFile – Expand in Place command.
3.TheDirectoryfielddisplaysthenewdirectorypathandthetreedisplayshowsthefilesand folders in the new directory.

Refer to the Cadence ApplicationInfrastructure User Guide for more information on mapping file extensions.The vi editor is the default editor for UNIX machines otherwise, theFile – Open commandlaunches the editor listed in the data registry file.To open a file,1.Select the file you want to open.2.Click theFile – Open command ordouble-click the file you want to open.Copying Files or FoldersTo copy a file or a folder,1.Select the files or folders you want to copy.2.Click theEdit – Copy command or click theCopy icon on the toolbar.The selection is copied to the clipboard.3.Select the folder to which you want to copy the selection.Youcanexpandorcollapsefolderstolocateanotherdirectoryinwhichyoucancopytheselection.4.Click theEdit – Paste command.You can also click thePaste icon on the toolbar.The status bar indicates that items are being copied.Ifanyofthedestinationfilesorfoldersaregoingtobeoverwritten,adialogboxpromptsyou to confirm the overwrite operation or cancel the copy operation.Printing FilesThePrint command opens the appropriate print utility based on the extension of the file tobe printed.July 2002

To rename a file or a folder,
1.Click the file or folder you want to rename.
Note:Onlyonefileorfoldercanberenamedatatime.Thenewfilenamecannotbethesame as that of another file or folder in the same directory. If the file name cannot bechanged to the name you select, a dialog box informs you why.2.Click theFile – Rename command.
The current file or folder name becomes a highlighted text field.3.Backspace or press delete to remove the current name.4.Type the new name.5.PressReturn.
Note:If you click on another file name before you pressReturn, your changes will belost.
Moving Files or Folders
To move a file or a folder,
1.Select the files or folders you want to move.2.Click theEdit – Cut command.
TheCutoperationpermanentlyerasestheselecteditem.Itcannotberecoveredunlessyou have a copy stored on backup media.
You can also click theCut icon on the toolbar or click right to use the pop-up menu.The selected set is copied to the clipboard.3.From the tree display, select a destination folder.
Note:If the folder you want to move the selection to is in another directory, you canexpand and collapse folders using theFile – Expand and
File – Collapse commandsuntil you find the appropriate destination folder.4.Click theEdit – Paste command.
You can also click thePaste icon on the toolbar or use the pop-up menu.

5.If necessary, type the new name and clickOK.
Updating the Display
To update the current image or data on the screen,

Click theView – Refresh command.
You can also click theRefresh icon on the toolbar.
WhenyouperformaView–Refreshaction,thefilemanagergoestothediskandreadsthe file system to update image or data on the screen. Your selections are preserved.
Displaying Information about Files and Folders

The files that match the filter appears in the tree display.
You can also type a string that defines the range of file names you want to display. Forexample, in the Filters box:
Typethestringc*.fmtofindfilesthatbeginwiththelettercandhavethefileextension.fm.
Thefilterassumesthatthereisanimplied^infrontofthefirstcharacterandanimplied$ after the last character.
Youcanusemultiplestringsseparatedbyspaces.Forexample,thestring*.html*.fmfinds files with different file extensions.Note:Filters only apply to files and not to folders.
Displaying Hidden Files
To show or hide hidden files and folders,1.Click the View – Options command.
2.Check theHidden Files box to display hidden files.Deselect theHidden Files box to hide hidden files.
Note:By default, the hidden data types are DOT_FILE and DOT_FOLDER.
Displaying Messages
The Message window lets you view error messages. These messages are also recorded toalog file. You must specify the .log file
Thestatus bar displays messages and information about the file manager, such as thenumber of files or folders selected. Messages about the operation of a menu item or aselected button also appear in this window.

When you exit the file manager, your settings are not saved. To save your settings, you usetheFile – Save Defaults command.
