Thang-ga(唐卡)is a special kind of painting. It was found only in Tibet, China. It started from the Tang dynasty(唐朝).Thang-ga paintings show Tibetan people's lives. In recent years, Thang-ga paintings have caught the public's attention. At the same time, the Chinese government has also tried hard to protect the art.

The colors of Thang-ga paintings look wonderful and special. Because of the special environment of Tibet and the excellent skills of artists, the paints(颜料)used in Thang-ga paintings are different from other paints. They were made from minerals like gold and silver, as well as some plants. The paints were made by hand and the beautiful colors could last(持续)for hundreds of years.

However, with the development of technology, people now use cheaper and easily-made chemicals to make Thang-ga paints. The traditional paints used in Thang-ga paintings took a lot of work and they were made in many secret ways. Later people stopped making the paints and forgot about them. So the skills needed to make them were almost lost. The traditional Thang-ga paintings are difficult to find now.

Every year, in late March or early April, a boat race takes place on the Thames River, England. This boat race is an event between the two most famous and also the oldest universities in Britain – the Oxford(牛津大学)and the Cambridge(剑桥大学). The idea for the boat race between the universities came from two friends – Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his friend Charles Wordsworth who was at Oxford. They decided to set up a boat race between the two universities. On March 12, 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford first. When the first boat race took place in a small town by Thames, eight students from each university became the competitors. Crowds of twenty thousand traveled to watch. It was so exciting. And the Oxford was clear winners. Later on, not only did the students from the two universities take part, but also some social groups attended the event. By 1845, with the small town becoming too crowded, the boat race had moved six miles up to the village – Putney. From 1856 on, the race has been held every year except war years. This boat race is considered to be “the world’s oldest sporting challenge”. The race is four and a quarter miles in just 20 minutes and the competitors often face difficulties. It usually takes six months for the two teams to prepare for the big days. In the past, the Oxford was mostly the winners. But things have changed from 1993 on. The Cambridge has won more.

The American writer Sally Seaman tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says founding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed (种子) and take care of it to make it grow.

First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend could listen to your complaints (抱怨) and do his or her best to help you. To make a friend, you can’t be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.

But things can not always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you can write a letter.

Mrs. Jones was over eighty, but she still drove her old car like a young woman. She loved driving very fast, and she said that she had never been punished for a driving offence (违章).

Then one day, she nearly lost her record. A police car followed her, and the policeman in it saw her pass a red light without stopping.

When Mrs. Jones came before the policeman, he looked at her seriously and said that she was too old to drive a car, and that her eyes had probably become weak with old age, so she had not stopped at the red light.

After the policeman finished his words, Mrs. Jones, without saying a word, opened the big handbag she was carrying and took out her sewing (针线活). She shows a needle (针) with a very small eye, and threaded (穿线) it at her first try.

When she had successfully done this, she took the thread out of the needle again and hands

both the needle and the thread to the policeman, saying, “Now it is your turn. You drive a car and you must see clearly.”

The policeman took the needle and tried to tread it. After trying for six times, he still didn’t succeed, so Mrs. Jones wasn’t punished. Her record remained unbroken.

Siena is an old city in the north of Italy. It began with a group of people living on its hills over 2,900 years ago. Around the year 1100, Siena became an important business center in Italy. In 1472, the first bank of the world was built in this city and has been doing business ever since. Today Siena is famous for keeping its “old face”. For example, its city walls, which helped keep the city safe in the past, are hundreds of years old now and look almost the same as before. Also, many old buildings are seen at the Piazza del Campo, the most important meeting place of the city. Few things have really changed in this center of public life for hundreds of years. Now people still go to the open space for sharing news, shopping, or playing sports. There is one more thing that helps keep Siena’s old face: cars cannot enter the city most of the time.

True, Siena is old, but it’s beautifully old. People are welcome to visit this beautiful city and walk into the past.

Are you happy most of the time? Or do you easily get angry sometimes? Everyone has a different temperament (脾气). It is usually believed that both genes (基因) and environment may influence people’s temperaments in different ways. Scientists have found that the season of the birth also play a role.

Scientists from Budapest, Hungary, studied 400 university students. In the study, the students needed to finish some questions to know which of four kinds of temperaments they most had. From the questions, scientists found that the students always answered something like “My mood(情绪) often changes for no reason.” And “I love to deal with new projects, even if it is risky.” These answers were then connected with their birthdays.

They discovered that people born in summer easily change between sad and happy moods compared to people born in winter. Those who always feel positive are mostly born in spring and summer.

The study also found that those born in fall less probably had a mood of depression which may easily drive them to cry, while those in winter were not easier to be angry.

Scientists said that this was probably because the seasons had an influence on certain chemicals in the human body. And the chemicals are important to control people’s moods even in adult life. “It seems that when you are born may increase or decrease your chance of developing certain mood disorders.” scientist Xenia Gonda told the Telegraph. 根据上文内容判断正(T)误(F)。

51. Ages probably may influence people’s temperaments according to Paragraph 1. 52. The underlined word “depression” most probably means sadness.

53. The answers to the questions of the study were matched with their birthdays. 54. People born in winter get sad or happy more easily.

51. F 题干意为:根据第1段内容,年龄可能影响人们的性情。而第一段里根本就没有谈到

年龄的问题。故答案是F。

53. T 从文中该句These answers were then connected with their birthdays.这些答案 (调查问卷的答案) 都与他们的出生有关。可知该题是正确的。

54. F 题干意为:冬天出生的人更容易变得悲伤或快乐。而文中第四段while those in winter were not easier to be angry.

It was a cold snowy morning after the winter vacation. And it was my first day at my new school. I was walking alone slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was early and there weren’t many people on the road. Suddenly a girl who was riding a bike on ice fell down. She was trying hard to get up but fell again. Without thinking, I went over and helped her. She said “thank you” with a smile and then rode away. Her words warned me a lot.

Finally, I got to school. The teacher led me to the classroom and introduced me to the class. Then he asked me to sit down besides a girl. I felt so nervous that I didn’t dare to look at her. Soon the first class, English, started. Their textbooks were different from those in my old school. As I was wondering what to do, and English book appeared in front of me. “Let’s share,” the girl beside me said, “Hi, I’m Carrie.” I looked up. It was the girl I helped this morning.
