There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across. but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening. For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active
in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve quickly, and you can be a fluent English speaker one day.
1.According to the writer, which should you improve first among the four skills?
A.Reading and listening.
B.Reading and writing.
C.Writing and speaking.
D.Speaking and listening.
2.To improve your reading, when you read you should ________.
A.look up all the new words in the dictionary
B.think about what you are reading actively
C.spend more time studying grammars
D.copy as many words and sentences as possible
3.The underlined phrase “come across” in Paragraph 2 can probably be replaced by “________”.
A.meet B.discover
C.hear D.look for

Learning a new language is a long and difficult process. This process can become easier if you set goals. Goals help guide language learners and give them reasons to continue studying a language. However, if your goals are too difficult, then you will probably become upset.
Many English learners set difficult and even unreasonable goals, such as sounding like a native speaker, or losing their accents. The problem with the goal of sounding like a native speaker is that it is not a reasonable goal for many people.
When English learners begin studying English after a certain age, they are not able to sound exactly like a native English speaker. That is the opinion of Eli Hinkel, a professor at Seattle Pacific University. She says that people who have not reached puberty still have enough muscle and brain plasticity (可塑性) to allow their brain to control their mouth muscles. Puberty is the period of life when a child becomes an adult. After your physical growth has stopped, the brain loses some of its ability to change the way it controls the muscles of the mouth. This is what results in an accent, according to Hinkel. In other words, having an accent is a natural part of the aging process of the brain.
That you might not sound like a native speaker does not mean that you should give up trying to improve your pronunciation. And that you have an accent does not mean that your language skills are poor. Hinkel suggests that English learners should not be too upset about their accents.
Another teacher says sounding like a native speaker is not necessary. Marla Yoshida is a teaching English as a foreign language teacher at the University of California, Irvine. She says that improving your pronunciation is surely possible — if you choose a reasonable goal. Marla Yoshida says that when you decide to diet, you are more likely to have success if you set reasonable goals. She suggests
working on specific areas of pronunciation that you can improve, instead of trying to sound like a native speaker.
1.What does the underlined part “unreasonable goals” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A.Goals that are meaningless.
B.Goals that are very small.
C.Goals that are based on facts.
D.Goals that are impossible to reach.
2.According to Paragraph 3, why are English learners unable to sound like a native speaker?
A.They have no native speakers to talk to.
B.They don’t have enough time to practice.
C.Their brain can’t control their mouth muscles.
D.Their mother tongue prevents them from doing so.
3.Which of the following statements would Eli Hinkel probably agree with?
A.Having an accent is acceptable.
B.Improving pronunciation isn’t that important.
C.Sounding like a native speaker is impossible.
D.Poor pronunciation means poor language skills.
1.D
2.C
3.A
根据第二段的“Many English learners set difficult and even unreasonable goals, such as sounding like a native speaker, or losing their accents.(许多英语学习者设定了困难甚至不合理的目标,比如听起来像母语人士,或者去
根据第三段的“After your physical growth has stopped, the brain loses some of its ability to change the way it controls the muscles of the mouth.(当你的身体发育停止后,大脑就失去了一些改变控制口腔肌肉方式的能力)”可知,英语学习者无法像母语人士一样发音,因为他们的大脑已经控制不了口腔里的肌肉了。故选C。
3.
根据第三段中的“In other words, having an accent is a natural part of the aging process of the brain.(换句话说,有口音是大脑发育过程中的一个自然组成部分)”及第四段中的“Hinkel suggests that English learners should not be too upset about their accents.(Hinkel建议英语学习者不要太在意他们的口音)”可推知,Hinkel认为有口音是可以接受的。故选A。

Sport is not only physically challenging, but can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout.
Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find faults in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters’ performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
1.An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is_____________.
A.to make sport less competitive
B.to increase their sense of success
C.to reduce their mental stress
D.to make sport more challenging
2.According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that_____________.
A.it can help them learn more about society
B.it enables them to find faults in themselves
C.it can provide them with valuable experiences
D.it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves
3.Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes_____________.
A.believing that criticism does good to their early development
B.without realizing criticism may destroy their selfconfidence
C.in order to make them remember life’s lessons
D.so as to put more pressure on them
4.According to the passage parents and coaches should_____________.
A.pay more attention to letting children enjoy sport
B.help children to win every game
C.train children to cope with stress
D.enable children to understand the positive aspect of sport
1.C
2.C
3.B
4.A
Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout.
The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place.
Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters’ performances. 以及Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

On my first day of high school,I asked an eleventh grader where my class was. And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the pool.” I found out five minutes later that we don't even have a fourth floor and there's no pool either! Besides that,I didn't have any trouble with the older kid.
I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours,so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550,but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.
The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I've prepared for the night before, gotten an A,and not remembered anything later. I've changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don't take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful!
While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they're also around in high school. I have a lot of friends who promised they'd never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you're applying for (申请) college. The “friends” who say you're a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It's hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don't follow their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.
1.What does the author think of high school?
A.There are very few activities.
B.It's hard to meet new people there.
C.It requires hard work.
D.There isn't enough time for homework.
2.The author advises high school students to________.
A.get ready for tests the night before
B.give up sports
C.choose useful classes
D.try their best to get good grades
3.The text is probably written by________.
A.a high school student B.a chemistry teacher
C.a college student D.a sports player
4.The last paragraph mainly tells us________.
A.about the trouble caused by drinking and smoking
B.not to go to any party in high school
C.not to lose ourselves in high school
D.about the importance of making friends
1.C
2.C
3.A
4.A

I traveled to London, England in the spring of 2016. Actually, I traveled with CAPA International Education on a study program. At that time, I did a full threemonth program but I traveled on weekends and during breaks.
I used to live in a small town outside New York. The idea of big cities has always excited me and I wanted to take advantage of that onceinalifetime opportunity. It was a great opportunity for me to see how independent I could be in another country, because I hope to travel a lot more in the future.
I lived in a flat in Ealing Broadway with several other students from different American schools. The biggest surprise I found there was the culture shock I experienced. I had expected traveling to London to be an easy transition (转变) for me because I thought their culture was close to that of America. But you know the language and the people were greatly different from what I had expected. They had different accents. In fact, they were noisy and more freethinking than most Americans I knew.
However, I tried to take part in their giant Chinese New Year celebration in Trafalgar Square. I went to several Jewish society holiday celebrations and actively participated in any cultural activities I knew at that time. It was great to be able to truly put myself in their culture. These are experiences I couldn't get anywhere
else.
I would suggest people hoping to follow in my footsteps not let anything hold them back from exploring the foreign cultures presented to them. Yes, you are there for school, but your number one priority (优先) is yourself. So make sure you go home with no regrets. Do not miss anything!
1.What was the author's main purpose in going to London?
A.To go sightseeing.
B.To visit some relatives.
C.To join in a study program.
D.To experience the life in a big city.
2.What did the author think of the opportunity of traveling to London?
A.It would change his life.
B.It would test his independence.
C.It would make his dream come true.
D.It would help improve his communication ability.
3.What was beyond the author's expectation after arriving in London?
A.Culture differences. B.Unfriendly students.
C.His living conditions. D.Some strange accents.
4.In the last paragraph, the author mainly advises people studying abroad to ________.
A.explore more interesting places for traveling
B.try to receive more international education
C.combine study with exploring foreign cultures
D.look for more ways to deal with the culture shock

A little boy was spending his Saturday morning playing in his sandbox(沙池).He had with him a box of cars and trucks, and a red plastic shovel. In the process of creating roads and tunnels in the sand,he discovered a large rock in the middle of the sandbox.
The boy dug around the rock, trying to get it out of the sand. With many struggles,he pushed the rock across the sandbox by using his feet. He was a very small boy and the rock was very huge. When the boy got the rock to the edge of the sandbox, however,he found that he couldn’t roll it up and over the little wall.
Determined, the little boy shoved and pushed, but every time the rock tipped(倾斜) and then fell back into the sandbox. Finally,he burst into tears of frustration. I used all the strength that I had!”“No,son,” said the father kindly.“You didn’t use all the strength you had. You didn’t ask me.” With that the father reached down, picked up the rock, and removed it from the sandbox.
Do you have “rocks” in your life that need to be removed? Are you discovering that you don’t have what it takes to lift them? There is one who is always available and willing to give us the strength we need. Isn’t it funny that we try so hard to do things all by ourselves?

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen (新生) , you still feel nervous that you don't know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognise a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with them can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something that freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more extracurricular activities than middle school does
such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.
1.What does the underlined word “orientation” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Training. B.Game.
C.Discussion. D.Examination.
2.What are freshmen probably worried about?
A.The learning task.
B.The ability to make friends.
C.The relationship with teachers.
D.The freshman orientation.
3.Extracurricular activities mainly help students ________.
A.build up healthy bodies
B.develop friendships
C.develop the interests
D.improve their learning ability
4.Who is this passage written for?
A.Freshmen at high school.
B.Freshmen's parents.
C.Middle school students.
D.Upperclassmen in high school.

A young sperm whale discovered dead off the coast of Spain died from eating a lot of rubbish. About pounds of rubbish, including plastic bags, ropes and fishing nets, was found inside the sperm whale's dead body.
The 32-foot-long whale was discovered near the small holiday place of Cabo de Palos in the southeast Murcia area in February. Officials at the EI Valle Wildlife Reserve Center found that it had died because it was unable to remove the rubbish from its body.
The animal's sad death has prompted Murcia's government alongside the European Environmental Association and the European Fund Regional Development, to start some actions against ocean waste.

Feel nervous on the first day of school? You are not alone! Here is some advice on how to make you feel comfortable.

Decide whether to take the bus, walk, or have a ride from your parents. It’s your call. If you want something familiar, take a bus ride and sit next to someone you already know. However, if you are really nervous, you can ask your mom or dad to drive you to school, but expect that there will be heavy traffic.

In 2016, China released guidelines forbidding weird(古怪的) construction, shifting their focus to the “economic, green and beautiful”. Now a new plan certainly fits the bill—Liuzhou Forest City, designed by the Italian firm Stefano Boeri Architetti, will be under construction in southern China.
The 175hectare, selfcontained neighborhood will contain more than 70 buildings—including homes, hospitals, hotels, schools and offices—all of which will be covered with 40, 000 trees and almost a million plants. This is the first experiment of the urban environment that's really trying to find a balance with nature.
The idea behind the project is to combine as many plants with the architecture as possible. The plants are expected to absorb almost 10, 000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of pollutants per year, and produce 900 tons of oxygen a year, while also decreasing the air temperature and providing a new habitat for displaced wildlife. Solar panels(控制板) on the roofs will collect renewable energy to power the buildings.
The project comes on the heels of Stefano Boeri Architetti's Vertical Forest, two residential towers in Milan covered in the equivalent(等同物) of five acres of
forest.
“We started to imagine if it was possible to create an urban environment by planting many trees in the city, ”Boeri said. China, in his eyes, provided the perfect background for such an ambitious project.
But the project's completion is a long way off.Construction is set to begin in 2020.Boeri said there is still a lot of planning and research required before a projected completion date can be set. He remains, however, optimistic about the project, and confident about its aim. “I really think that bringing forests into the city is a way to reduce climate change, ”he said.
1.What can be concluded from the first two paragraphs?
A.A ban will be stopped quickly.
B.An Italian company will pay for the new plan.
C.A new neighborhood will satisfy the guidelines.
D.All strange buildings in China have been torn down.

Now a new plan certainly fits the bill—Liuzhou Forest City, designed by the Italian firm Stefano Boeri Architetti, will be under construction in southern China.
The plants are expected to absorb almost 10, 000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of pollutants per year, and produce 900 tons of oxygen a year, while also decreasing the air temperature and providing a new habitat for displaced wildlife. 故选A。

Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese.Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience,
researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调).
One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr.Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码)of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do.This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role.A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study, Patrick C.M.Wong, said it might work both
ways.It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
1.Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?
A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C.Because music training might help people with language study.
D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
2.The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “________”.
A.created B.spelled
C.seemed D.pronounced
3.What would be the best title for this passage?
A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter Than English Speakers
B.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study
C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning
D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs
1.B
2.D
3.B
根据第二段第二句中“…researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch”(西北大学的研究人员说,这两种技能都利用了大脑中帮助人们发现音调变化的相同部分)可知,学习这两种技能利用了大脑的相同部分,因此,汉语学习和音乐训练有关系。故选B项。
2.
根据第四段中“This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned. ”(这是因为在普通话和其他亚洲语言中,音调起着核心作用。一个单音节词可以有多种含义,这取决于它是怎样发音的。)可知,在普通话和其他亚洲语言中,音调起着关键作用。对一个单音节词而言,当人们以不同的音调说这个词时,这个词就表达出不同的意思。在第六段中以“mi”为例,这个词不同的音调就代表着不同的意思,所以画线单词表达的应是人们对一个单音节词的“发音”。 故选D项。
3.
主旨大意题。通读全文特别是第二段的“Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese.(现在研究人员发现,受过音乐训练的人更容易学习汉语。)”

根据第一段“The most embarrassing was when my Mom apologized to the people we were staying with because her “pants were dirty”. They looked at her in amazement, not knowing how to react. You see, Mom had fallen over and gotten mud on her jeans. But in Britain, “pants” means underpants(内裤)or knickers, not trousers as it does back home.
第二段“Fed up and tired, I finally had to go out to find a phone box. She explained that her flat was on the first floor, which for me meant the ground floor.( 我疲惫不堪,最后只好出去找电话亭。她解释说她的公寓在一楼(first floor)”,对我来说那就是底层(ground floor))”可知,大卫找不到朋友的公寓,因此,向他的朋友打电话求助。因此,大卫出去找了个电话亭,是为了B项“phone his friend for help(打电话给他的朋友寻求帮助)” 符合题意。故选B项。
3.
细节理解题。根据第三段“When I asked for the “restroom” in a big department store, people kept directing me to a room with seats where I could sit and “rest”(当我在一家大百货公司问“洗手间”时,人们总是把我引向一个有座位的房间,在那里我可以坐下来“休息”)可知,当Tom要求去卫生间时,他周围的人都误以为他需要休息,把他引向一个有座位的房间。因此,当汤姆问“洗手间”时,他周围的人都认为C项“he wanted to have a rest(他想休息一下)”符合题意。故选C项。

Football is my favorite sport. I loved to watch it, but I had never played in a football game before I went to college. I lacked self-confidence and I doubted if I could do well in a team, which was why I hardly did sports together with others. I just loved practicing playing football in the backyard of my house.
About one month after I went to college, one day some of my classmates said they'd play a football game with some players of another class. I really
looked forward to it but never thought I'd join them to play. That day finally came and I went to watch with my classmates. However, just about ten minutes after the game started, one member of our football team got injured and could no longer play. The other members looked worried. Then one of them came to me and asked, “Can you play?” At first, I shook my head, but then I nodded. “Great! Come and play,” he said. I followed him, having no idea at all what to do. To my joy, he asked me to play in defense (防守). Defense was my favorite because I found it more fun and less complicated (复杂的). Then the game began again. There weren't a lot of big kids on the offensive line (攻击线) of the other team and I suddenly gained some self-confidence. About five minutes later, the ball was kicked toward the guard. I thought it was a good opportunity for me. I quickly ran past the guard and got the ball. When the guard came to the offensive line, I kicked the ball. I scored and all my classmates cheered. You may not believe it, but I scored twice that time. The final score was 6—2 and we won. My teammates thought that I did very well and none of them believed I hadn't played in a game before.
That game really changed me. I am a really confident person now and often play football games with my teammates.

Betty Schrampfer Azar is a world-famous expert on teaching English grammar. Here are some of her opinions.
Why do students need to learn grammar? When teachers are deciding which grammar points to teach, they should first ask two questions. First, will understanding the point help students be understood and will it help them understand better? Next, will learning the grammar point help students be
acceptable as English speakers?
People usually think that grammar is all about memorizing rules. In fact, grammar is not just learning rules. It is a way to help students along the way to communication. Teachers should know that students do not all learn in the same way. Each may have a different learning style when it comes to learning grammar. Some may see a pattern and understand the rule. Others need explanations and more practice. “But to teach grammar as subject matter and test it as though you were testing the memorization of dates in history is sure to bore everybody and not to reach the goals that you are trying to reach—successful communication experiences,” she says.
Why do some teachers hate teaching grammar? Many teachers are not comfortable teaching grammar because they do not know how to answer their students’questions. “Most native speakers of English don't learn it in school,” she says. “If you don’t know any grammar of your own language and then you are asked to teach it, it's possible that your students may know more grammar than you and you can't answer their questions.”
Can teaching grammar really be fun? Teachers should learn to make the teaching of grammar fun. She says, “My students enjoy learning grammar as much as I enjoy teaching it. I think grammar is fascinating. It holds language together. It is really beautiful when you get to know it. Grammar is quite a remarkable (非凡的) thing.”
1.What should teachers do before teaching grammar points?
A.Know the specific goal of teaching grammar.
B.Develop a good teaching style.
C.Find out students’learning needs.
D.Let students memorize some rules.
2.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Memorizing rules.
B.Grammar.
C.Learning rules.
D.Practice.
3.What can we learn about grammar according to Betty Schrampfer Azar?
A.Grammar should be taught as a subject.
B.Native speakers don’t need to learn grammar.
C.Different students learn grammar in different ways.
D.It's useful to memorize rules when students learn grammar.
4.What does Betty Schrampfer Azar think of grammar?
A.Boring. B.Beautiful. C.Hard to teach. D.Easy to learn.
1.A
2.B
3.C
4.B

Sure, it’s good to get along well with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.
And yes, it’s good to get along well with your teacher because, in general, it’s smart to learn how to get along well with the different types of people you’ll meet throughout your life.
In fact, kids who get along well with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable about asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier for them to understand new materials and do their best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school issues.
Here is a question: what if you don’t get along well with your teachers? In fact, teachers want to get along well with you and enjoy seeing you learn. But teachers and students sometimes have personality clashes (个性冲突), which can
happen between any two people. If you show your teacher that you want to make the situation better, he or she will probably do everything possible to make that happen. By dealing with a problem like this, you learn something about how to get along with people who are different from you.
However, if a certain teacher isn’t your favorite, you can still have a successful relationship with him or her, especially if you fulfill your basic responsibilities as a student. Here are some of those responsibilities:
Attend class ready to learn.
Be prepared for class with the right pencils, books, and completed assignments.
Listen when your teacher is talking.
Do your best, whether it’s a classroom assignment, homework, or a test.
1.According to the passage, getting along well with your teachers will make you____.
A.get the best scores in the exams
B.have more pleasant time in the classroom
C.have no problems with study
D.get a better seat in the classroom
2.The underlined word “that” in the fourth paragraph refers to____.
A.getting along very well with classmates
B.the disappearance of personality differences
C.a better relationship between you and your teacher
D.the happy time you have in the classroom
3.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The importance of friendships in schools.
B.The importance of a good relationship with your teachers.
C.Studying skills for students.
D.Useful skills to get along well with your teachers.

The US teenager Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at Hebron High School in Texas. But when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Mandarin class, he quickly changed his mind.
“I thought Mandarin would be more useful than Latin,” said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language. He speaks Mandarin to order food at Chinese restaurants and can read social media posts from his Chinese-speaking friends.
While it's a difficult language to master, the high school junior, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be important for his career. “Chinese is a good language to know, especially with China becoming more powerful,” he said.
Many experts agree that proficiency in a language spoken by a billion people worldwide will give American students the edge in the global economy. “People are looking on China as our next economic competitor, and interest in Mandarin is growing,” said Marty Abbott, the executive director of the American Council
on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. “We're seeing it in all parts of the country.”
According to Abbott, as many as 100,000 students are now studying Mandarin throughout the US, in public and private schools. She said the US government has designated Mandarin as a “critical needs” language and provides professional development programs for teachers. “Our government wants to increase our language competency for economic competitiveness,” Abbott said.
At the same time, the Chinese government is spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes set up in many US states. For example, the Confucius Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas has been the home of a Confucius Institute for 10 years. It sponsors Confucius Classrooms at 21 local public and private schools, where tens of thousands of students are learning Mandarin.
1.Why did Thomas Cheatham decide to study Mandarin instead of Latin?
A.Mandarin was easier to learn than Latin.
B.Mandarin could be helpful in his future career.
C.Mandarin could enable him to make more friends online.
D.Mandarin might help him learn more about Chinese food.
2.What does the underlined word “proficiency” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Great skill. B.Strong interest.
C.Shortage of practice. D.A level of difficulty.
3.Which of the following statements might Marty Abbott agree with?
A.Mandarin should be taught in classrooms throughout the US.
B.The US government's policy has helped popularize Mandarin in the US.
C.Many Americans learn Mandarin because they worry about their economic competitiveness.
D.Those who master Chinese will be the most competitive in the US in the future.
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The benefits of learning Mandarin for American students.

C.The rising popularity of Mandarin among American students.
D.The influence of China's growing power on American education.

Recently, a woman who lives in a small apartment in San Francisco asked me a question. She wanted to know how to prepare for a big earthquake. In fact, it’s quite necessary for people in San Francisco to do that. Since she lives in an apartment, she cannot store water in a backyard or place a rain collection system. Here is my answer to her.
Firstly, you should store water and food. Storing water is actually very easy. A gallon per day is enough for you to drink. You can buy one of those 5-gallon spring water containers and put it in the kitchen. Check the expiration date (截止日期), and get some new water when needed. Food isn’t that hard, either. Get a few cans of soup, some canned fruit, and canned chickpeas or beans. Make sure
they all can be eaten without heating. This will cost less than DS|20 and take up very little space in your kitchen. Throw a cheap canopener in there while you’re at it, tape (用胶带粘贴) it to the can, and forget about that one, too.
Secondly, first aid is going to let you stay out of limited medical facilities (装备), allowing you to avoid getting truly injured. In a big disaster, you’ll probably get hurt. Being able to clean and protect a skin wound is important. The Red Cross first-aid kit is cheap (DS|16) and small, and contains what you need.
Finally, information is almost as important as the other two. You really want a small radio to know what is going on around you. There are going to be shelters, first-aid facilities, and safe and unsafe areas. You need a radio to know where they are. The National Guard will be somewhere helping out, and you need to learn where. The network will probably be down, so you can’t count on that.
Therefore, you just need DS|60 and about 30 minutes of shopping, and then you can survive for 3 days without any help.
1.What was the woman’s problem?
A.She was afraid of big earthquakes.
B.She didn’t have a backyard to store her things.
C.She didn’t know how to prepare for a big earthquake.
D.She didn’t know how to set up a rain collection system.
2.The underlined part in Paragraph 2 means the woman should________.
A.buy another can-opener
B.just leave the can-opener there
C.forget everything she has done
D.tape the can-opener to the can
3.What does the author think of preparing a first-aid kit?
A.It’s not an easy thing to do.
B.It can’t be used to save a life
C.It’s important in an earthquake.
D.It’s too limited for people in a disaster.

Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes? Let’s have a look.
People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are nervous have ants in their pants. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down. They are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family.
Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can burn a hole in your pocket. Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you have less money than usual, you may have to tighten your belt.
I always praise people who can save their money and not spend too much. I really take my hat off to them. Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it at the drop of a hat, which means I instantly spend it.
Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for their boots think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people.
My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too serious and never shows his feelings openly. But I know that my father wears his heart on his sleeve.

The word “sport” first meant something that people did in their free time. Later it often meant hunting wild animals and birds. About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Such people play because they leant to. A few people are paid for sport they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best ones can earn a lot of money. For example, a professional football player in England earns more than 300,000 dollars a year. The stars earn a lot more. International golf and tennis champions can make more than 500,000 dollars a year. Of course, only a few sportsmen can earn as much as that.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is that the stars can earn more money from advertising than from sports. An advertisement for sports equipment does not simply mean, “Buy our things”. It says, “Buy the same shirt and shoes as…” Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and food. They allow the companies to use their names or a photo of them and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.

Sure, it’s good to get along well with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.
And yes, it’s good to get along well with your teacher because, in general, it’s smart to learn how to get along well with the different types of people you’ll meet throughout your life.
In fact, kids who get along well with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable with asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier for them to understand new materials and makes them do their best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she
can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school matters.
Here is a question: What if you don’t get along with your teachers? In fact, teachers want to get along well with you and enjoy seeing you learn. But teachers and students sometimes have personality clashes(个性冲突), which can happen between any two people. If you show your teacher that you want to make the situation better, he or she will probably do everything possible to make that happen. By dealing with a problem like this, you learn something about how to get along with people who are different from you.
However if, a certain teacher isn’t your favourite, you can still have a successful relationship with him or her especially ________. Here are some of those responsibilities(责任):
Attend class ready to learn.
Be prepared for class with the right stationery, and completed assignments(作业).
Listen when your teacher is talking.
Do your best, whether it’s a classroom assignment, homework or a test.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck? And was Paul friendly just because I had a car? When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we will miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” That’s friendly. But there’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the dog bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.
“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another phrase that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But this phrase contains the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does
what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning behind one’s words may save another mistake.
1.This passage is mainly about__________.
A.how to interpret what people say
B.what to do when you listen to others talking
C.how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people
D.why we misunderstand people sometimes
2.According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that________.
A.we fail to listen carefully when they talk
B.people tend to be annoyed when we check what they say
C.people usually state one thing but mean another
D.we tend to doubt what our friends say
3.In the second paragraph, the underlined word “it” refers to___________.
A.your effort B.a lucky dog
C.a bit of envy D.your luck

What is body surfing?
Bodysurfing is related to riding on a wave with no help from aid tools such as a surfboard. That’s why it is called the “purest” form of surfing. In fact, it is one of very few extreme sports—free climbing and cliff diving are. others—that can be practiced using nothing but the human body.
How do you do it?
To catch a wave, swim to where the waves break and, as one approaches, start swimming towards the beach. You must try to travel at the same speed as the wave and, if you do it correctly, you will feel the wave lifting you and pushing you forwards. Then try and cut along the surface of the wave.
What do you need?
It is more enjoyable and safer if you use flippers (large flat rubber shoes). This
is because they enable you to swim faster and surf along them more easily. A wetsuit is also advisable. Another aid is a handboard, a mini-surf board about the size of an iron, held in one hand to speed up along the wave. If you are lucky enough to be surfing in warm water, make sure you have your boardshorts at the ready.
Unofficial world championship
Bodysurfing is not a professional sport, but in Hawaii there is such a festival called the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic each year. Every year, thousands of teenagers participate in programs at their local art museums. But do any of them remember their time at museum events later in life? A new report suggests that the answer is yes - and finds that alumni (毕业生)of arts-based museum programs credit them with changing the course of their lives, even years after the fact.
The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles recently asked researchers to conduct a study to find out how effective their long-standing teen art programs really are. They involved over 300 former participants of four programs for teens that have been in existence since the 1990s. Alumni, whose current ages range from 18 to 36, were invited to find out how they viewed their participation years after the fact.
Among the alumni surveyed, 75 percent of alumni rated die teen program experience as the most favorable impact on their own lives, beating family, school and their neighborhoods. Nearly 55 percent thought that it was one of the most important experiences they'd ever had, regardless of age and two-thirds said that
they were often in situations where then experience in museums affected their actions or thoughts.
It turns out that participating in art programs also helps keep teens enthusiastic about arts even after they reach adulthood: 96 percent of participants had visited an art museum within the last two years, and 68 percent had visited an art museum five or more times within the last two years. Thirty-two percent of program alumni work in the arts as adults.
Though the study is the first of its kind to explore the impact of teen-specific art programs in museums, it reflects other research on the important benefits of engaging with the arts. A decade of surveys the National Endowment for the Arts found that childhood experience with the arts have linked arts education to everything from lower drop-out rates to improvement in critical thinking skills.
1.What does the underlined phrase “the fact” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Changing the course of children's life.
B.Participating in childhood art programs
C.Organizing arts-based museum programs.
D.Remembering the time at museum events.

A.Passion for arts may remain long in kids' whole life.

I promised Michael I wouldn’t mention this until the season was over. Now l think it's time.
Early last season, I wrote a column about an art of kindness I had seen Jordan do to a disabled child outside the stadium. After it ran,I got a call from a marl in the western suburbs. He said,“I read what you wrote about Jordan. but I thought I should tell you another thing I saw. ”
Here it comes, I thought. It always does. Write something nice about a person, and people call you up to say that the person is not so nice.
A few weeks later Jordan and I were talking about something else before a game, and I brought up what the man had said. Was the man right? Had Jordan really been talking to those two boys in that poor and dirty neighborhood?
\"Not two boys,\" Jordan said. \"But four.\"
And he named them. He said four names. And what did they talk about?
\"Everything,” Jordan said. \" Anything. I’ve asked to see their grades so that I can check to see if they're paying attention to their study. If it turns out that one or two of them may need teaching, I make sure they get it.\"
It's just one more part of Michael Jordan's life one more thing that no one knows about, and one more thing Jordan does fight for. The NBA season is over now, and those boys have their memories. So do J! When the expert reviewers begin to turn against Jordan as they surely will, I'll think about those boys under the streetlight, waiting for the man they know to come. For someone they can depend on.
1.The writer wrote this story about Jordan and his young friends because ______
A.he thought highly of Jordan's deeds
B.he hated to see Jordan do something bad

I sat down, with food in my lap, waiting to watch a movie. It sounds like a typical Friday night at home, but this time it was not. I was sitting down in a theatre of over 300 Filipinos speaking their native tongues. We were watching a film named Ulam: Main Dish. It’s directed by a Filipino-American director, and it’s about Filipino / Filipino-American food.
Right before the film began, I was caught in this realization: this is a film created by my people, for my people and about my people, and shared with an audience much larger than just us. The World Wildlife Fund for Nature - WWF - reports that nearly 3 billion animals were killed or displaced by Australia’s wildfires in 2019 and 2020. The number, reported in late July, was about three times higher than an earlier WWF estimate. “It ranks as one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history,” said WWF - Australia Chief Executive officer Dermot O’ Gorman.
The WWF said it used different methods to estimate wildlife populations, including information from over 100, 000 studies. The scientists created models to estimate the number of creatures found in areas destroyed by fire. Project leader Lily Van Eeden from the University of Sydney said the research was the first continent - wide examination of animals affected by wildfires. “Other nations can build upon this research to improve understanding of bushfire impacts everywhere,” she said.
Those creatures that fled destroyed habitats faced a lack of food and shelter or the likelihood of moving into already occupied habitats. Researchers said the destruction will cause some species to become extinct before their existence is even recorded. “We don’t even know what we are losing,” said Chris Dickman, a professor of ecology at the University of Sydney. “These were species that were here and now they have gone. . . It’s almost too tragic to think about,” Dickman added.
The WWF report calls for improvements in habitat connectivity to help
species escape from fires. It also calls for identifying and protecting habitat that was not burned to help save threatened species. An expanded report on the study is expected later this year.
The wildfires started in September 2019 and continued through March of this year. Scientists say the fires were fueled by higher than normal temperatures and years of drought in the Australian bush. The fires caused 34 human deaths and destroyed nearly 3, 000 homes. The WWF said that over the past year, it had raised money from donors to allocate emergency aid to the front lines of the fires to help injured and displaced wildlife.
1.What do we know about Australia’s wildfires in 2019 and 2020?
A.They were the worst disasters in history.
B.Over 3 billion animals died in the wildfires.
C.They caused more damage than calculated earlier.
D.Most animals moved to already occupied habitats.
2.How did Chris Dickman feel about the extinction of some species?
A.Astonished. B.Pained. C.Annoyed. D.Puzzled.
3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The wildfires last a whole year.
B.The wildfires were caused by the heat.
C.The wildfires also cause damages to humans.
D.The wildfires were soon under control with donations.
4.What lesson can we learn from the text?
A.Humans shouldn’t occupy wildlife habitat.
B.Humans shouldn’t overestimate the bushfire.
C.We should raise money for wildlife protection.
D.We should develop the methods to prevent wildfires.

Volunteering is one of the major wealth of any American city or town. People get together to help others less fortunate than themselves, or victims of a natural or man-made disaster. Since the start of our country this has been one of the noticeable features of our society.
Beginning in the Colonial Period and continuing down to today our country’s history is full of examples of people helping each other. Requiring high school students to take part in voluntary community service projects introduces them to this important part of our society. And while many students complain about this program at first, a large number of them find great individual(个人的) satisfaction when they look back at the things they achieved.
Our son, who graduated in 2005, found that he enjoyed the time he spent with primary school students helping them with their reading. In some ways he
became a hero to the young boys and girls he was spending time with, simply because he was a high school student and took the time to get to know them. By the end of his first year in the program he was looking forward to the next school year and a new group of kids. It was particularly satisfying when a child he had helped saw him some place in the community and remembered him.
Having high school students take part in required community service activities helps give them an important sense of belonging to the adult world. It also gives them first-hand experience in activities and situations they might not otherwise experience. And it shows them that they can make a valuable contribution towards the society with just a little effort and a few hours of their time.
1.What kind of feeling is expressed in Paragraph 1?
A.Surprise B.Doubt C.Concern D.Pride
2.The underlined “complain about” in Paragraph 2 has the same meaning as .
A.Think little of highly of
B.Look forward to C.Jump at D.Think
3.What do we know about the author’s son?
A.He has been a volunteer for about one year.
B.He won much respect for his voluntary work.
C.He hoped the children he helped would remember him.
D.He felt pleased when he was recognized by other volunteers.
4.In paragraph 4, the author mainly discusses__________.
A.The benefits of required volunteering
B.The importance of first-hand experience
C.The requirements for being a volunteer
D.The responsibility of contributing to society

As the novel coronavirus epidemic continues, one school after another has organized online classes. The most common form is live streaming, in which all participants, teacher and students alike, sit in front of a computer camera and see each other via the platform.
Many teachers and students simply wear casual clothing for the class, and jokes emerge about each other’s appearance. After all, most of the time it is the teacher appearing on screen, and the students, even if called on by the teacher, will only show their faces.
Yet Shijiazhuang No.1 Middle School in Hebei province recently triggered heated discussion by requiring teachers to wear formal suits and students to wear uniforms while attending online classes.
By Saturday morning, the related topic has become one of the hottest topics on Sina Weibo, with 180 million views.
“The practice can improve students’ sense of formality in the online classes and make them more attentive, said Yao Haibo,” a head teacher of the school in a video clip. “It can also grant students a sense of honor and make them remember their identities as students.”
However, in the comment sections, some micro bloggers claiming to be students disagreed.
“Not useful. Whether one works hard or not is not decided by a uniform,” was the most highly voted comment, with 31,000 “likes”.
“Maybe a good move, but unnecessary,” was another highly voted comment.
Whatever the argument is, the problem might be solved in the not — so — distant future. According to official data, the number of newly confirmed diagnosed cases was 397 on Saturday.
The students and teachers might, hopefully, see each other in classrooms soon.

I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have porridge, eggs or toast. When others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn’t alone when I was sad. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother preferred to know where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. We had to clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids got to wear the same clothes for days. We could not lie in bed “sick” in order to miss school.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and get up at night the next morning. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, my mother was brave to break the Child Labor Law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook and all kinds of things at home. I believe she lay awake thinking up all things for us to do.
My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Two of her child received higher education. None of us have ever been taken away by the police or divorced (离婚). Going on vacation can be challenging for people with physical disabilities. Hotels aren't always clear about how accessible (可进入)they are and the adaptive equipment needed to participate in certain activities can be expensive or difficult to obtain.
This is where the online travel marketplace Wheel the World comes in. The website connects physically disabled people with special tour packages, depending on the person's needs.
Today Wheel the World offers over 30 accessible destinations in the U.S. and abroad. They've served almost 900 disabled people, their family, and friends. Travelers can sign up for trips to destinations such as New York, Hawaii, Paris, London, and Kruger National Park in South Africa. Trip packages can include adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, which can be used on the beach and in the ocean, and kayaks (皮艇),which can help those disabled to kayak. The team
also checks the accessibility of destinations themselves, evaluating things such as door widths, bed heights, bathrooms' accessibility and if lifts are functioning.
Silberstein, the company's founder, says there are some trips that are suitable for blind people, though Wheel the World focuses on people with mobility issues. And in the future, they plan to include trips for people with hearing loss, and people with emotional disabilities. “One of the biggest barriers for travelers with physical disabilities is finding information about accessible trips, which is a gap Wheel the World aims to close,” says Silberstein.
Wheel the World is working to enlarge tours in Europe-currently their website lists London and Paris as the only destinations on the continent, but their eventual goal is much higher. “We want to allow millions of disabled people to travel to thousands of destinations,” Silberstein says.

根据第一段“Going on vacation can be...are and the adaptive equipment needed to participate in certain activities can be expensive or difficult to obtain.”可知度假对于残疾人来说很难,接着第二段第一句“This is where the online travel marketplace Wheel the World comes in. ”表明这就是在线旅游市场网站Wheel the World起作用的地方。由此推断第一段就是为了介绍创办Wheel the World网站的背景。故选C项。
2.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The website connects physically disabled people with special tour packages, depending on the person's needs.”
根据第四段中的“ they plan to include trips for people with hearing loss, and people with emotional disabilities. One of the biggest barriers for travelers with physical disabilities is finding information about accessible trips, which is a gap Wheel the World aims to close,” says Silberstein.” 故选A项。
