My Favorite Chinese Festivals

Hi there! My name is Lili and I'm 10 years old. I was born in Beijing, China and I love learning about the amazing festivals we celebrate every year. I thought I could tell you all about some of my favorite Chinese festivals! Chinese New Year

This is probably the most famous Chinese festival of all! We call it the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year too. It's a huge celebration that lasts for 15 days. On New Year's Eve, my whole family gathers together for a big feast with all our favorite foods like dumplings, noodles, fish and sweet rice balls. We eat these foods because they are lucky symbols - like the fish for prosperity and the long noodles for a long life.

After our meal, we give the kids red envelopes with money inside called hongbao. We're supposed to stay up late to ring in the new year at midnight by setting off firecrackers and fireworks. It's so exciting! The fireworks are a way to scare off evil spirits for the coming year.

For the next two weeks, we don't do any housework because it's considered bad luck to sweep or clean. Instead, we visit

friends and family, watch dragon dances, and eat lots of delicious snacks. I love Chinese New Year - it's my favorite time of year! Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival happens on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year celebrations. During this festival, we hang up beautiful lanterns all over the city and eat special sticky rice balls called tangyuan which symbolize family togetherness.

One of the best parts is trying to solve the riddles written on the lanterns! There are prizes if you can guess them correctly. My grandparents are really good at deciphering the lantern riddles. On Lantern Festival night, we go outside as a family to appreciate the full moon and all the lanterns decorating the streets. People also light small fires in the courtyards as part of tradition. I always feel so happy and warm during this magical festival.

Qingming Festival

The Qingming or Tomb Sweeping Festival happens in early April every year. It's a day to remember our ancestors by cleaning and decorating their grave sites. My parents take me to visit the graves of my great-grandparents in the countryside outside Beijing.

We sweep away any dirt or debris from the gravestones, then place fresh flowers, light incense and leave offerings of food like fruit. It's a way to show respect for our family members who came before us. The countryside is so beautiful in early spring when we go for Qingming.

After visiting the graves, my family has a picnic in the meadow. We fly colorful kites and my grandpa always tells funny stories about our ancestors. Even though it's a somber holiday, I have happy memories of Qingming every year. Dragon Boat Festival

One of the most exciting and unique festivals is the Dragon Boat Festival in early summer. It commemorates the life and death of an ancient Chinese poet and minister named Qu Yuan. He drowned himself in protest against the corrupt rulers of his time.

During the festival, there are dragon boat racing

competitions on rivers and lakes across China! The boats are so cool - they are long and narrow with a carved dragon head at the front. The rowers have to paddle in sync to the beat of a drum. People also make and eat zongzi, which are pyramid-shaped sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. My mom

makes the most delicious zongzi every year! We stuff them with different fillings like red bean paste, chicken, and even a sweet or savory egg yolk mixture in the center.

I love watching the dragon boat races and cheering on my city's team. It's such a lively celebration with so much energy and spirit!

Mid-Autumn Festival

This holiday in the eighth lunar month is all about the full moon. We call it the Mid-Autumn Festival because it signals the middle of the autumn season and the harvest time. Families get together to admire the bright full moon and eat mooncakes! Mooncakes are these dense, sweet pastries stuffed with lotus seed paste or other fillings. The mooncakes are stamped with decorative designs like the lunar goddess Chang'e or Chinese characters for \"longevity.\" I think they are so pretty but very rich - I can only eat a few bites!

On Mid-Autumn night, we go outside and gaze at the full harvest moon which is supposed to be the biggest and brightest of the year. My dad always tells the classic folklore story of Chang'e, the lady who lives on the moon. We also light lanterns and play games in the moonlight.

Even though I was born in the city, Mid-Autumn Festival really connects me to China's ancient agricultural traditions. Spending time with family under the beautiful full moon makes me feel so peaceful and grateful.

There are so many other Chinese holidays to learn about too - like the Hungry Ghost Festival, Double Ninth Festival, and more. But these are some of my personal favorites that really highlight the rich culture and traditions in China. Every festival has its own special foods, customs and stories behind the celebrations. Learning about these festivals from my parents and

grandparents makes me feel pride in my Chinese heritage. I hope you enjoyed reading about them too! Let me know if you have any other questions.
