For a few years, I have been wearing a ring on my right hand. It’s not always the 36 ring, but it’s always a ring that has 37 on it so that when I look at it, I’m 38 or reminded of something important . I have made a 39 of buying rings like this whenever I see one in a store. Sometimes I give them away as 40 to someone like Jennie.
I first met Jennie in the 41 waiting room and we had talked several times. One night I sat down beside her and 42 how her son was going because I knew that he was in very 43
condition. She told me that she didn’t know what to do any more because it seemed none of the 44 from the doctors was good. They weren’t at all sure her son was going to 45 the accident that had hurt him so badly. With 46 in her eyes she said, “They’re taking away my 47 .”
I knew then that it was 48 just a coincidence (巧合) that I was wearing the ring that I had on that day. As she 49 to talk, I 50 slipped the ring off my finger and placed it in Jennie’s hand. I told her to wear it to remember that God loved her and He would be with her 51 all of this. 52 Jennie looked down at the ring, she got excited and then held it tightly, 53 the word written on the ring was “HOPE”.
The last day I was at the hospital, I saw Jennie in the distance as I got on the lift. She 54 and held up the hand with the ring on it as she called out to me saying, “Look, I 55 have Hope!”

A
It was the end of my first day as a waitress in a busy New York restaurant. My cap had gone away, and my feet hurt. The loaded plates I carried seemed to be heavier and heavier. Tired and discouraged, I didn’t seem able to do anything right. As I made out a check for a family with several children who had changed their ice-cream order a dozen times, I was ready to stop. Then the father smiled at me as he handed me my tip. “Well done,” he said, “you’ve looked after us really well.” Suddenly my tiredness disappeared. I smiled back, and later, when the manager asked me how I’d liked my first day, I said, “Fine!” Those few words of praise had changed everything. Praise is like sunlight to human spirit; we cannot flower and grow without it. And yet, most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold criticism (批评), but are unwilling to give out fellows the warm sunshine of praise. Perhaps that is why one word of praise can bring such pleasure.
It’s strange how chary we are about praising. Perhaps it’s because few of us know how to accept it. It’s especially rewarding to give praise in areas in which effort generally goes unnoticed. An artist gets admired for a glorious (关荣的)picture,a cook for a perfect meal. But do you ever tell your laundry (洗衣房)manager how pleased you are when the shirts are done just right? In fact,to give

this job so I could travel the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable lessons. The work is sometimes difficult. I have seen famines, wars, earthquakes, poverty (贫穷)and death. But I have also seen courage, hope and happiness.
In India, I visited a city where there were many homeless children. Some were as young as four years old. They lived in the streets and survived by begging or stealing. But then a wonderful lady called Rosa opened a home for them. Within one year, she was looking after two hundred children. She clothed them, fed them, and taught them. She gave them hope.
Another time, I was in Turkey after a terrible earthquake, in one place. I found an old lady whose house was in ruins, her son was missing and rescuer workers said there was no chance that he was still alive. But the old lady did not give up hope. For four days, she moved heavy stones one at a time by herself. She did not stop until she found her son. He was alive.
Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious condition. He had undergone (经历) twenty operations and spent nearly his whole life in hospital. I thought he would be sad, but when I met him, his smile was so warm and welcoming.
In life, we need role models that we can admire and learn from. When my life is difficult, I try to remember the courage and goodness of these three people.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke came from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple that I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
6
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership – a shop selling cars – was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesman. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
“Thank you” – two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.
