Yard sales are very popular during weekends in spring and summer in America. For example, on one weekend you can find announcements for almost 200 yard sales around Washington D.C. Early in the morning all the things to be sold are

carried out of the house. Almost anything can be sold at the yard sale: used furniture, old clothes, CDs or paintings. Sometimes there are more clothes than anything else. People can buy things at a much lower price than in stores. Some people enjoy hunting in the yard sale and sometimes they can find something really valuable. Yard sales are a very small part of what experts call the underground economy in America.

Good morning. Today we’re going to look at ICI’s environmental programs and environmental performance since 1990. I’d like to begin with some background to ICI’s environmental projects. Then we’ll go on to look at our Challenge 2000 project. And finally, we’ll turn to the results of these programs.

Now the story really began in the 1980s when people started becoming more concerned about environmental issues. The first ICI environmental project was a result of the realization that, as a major player in the chemicals industry, ICI would have to address these growing public concerns. So, in 1990 we presented our shareholders with a program to reduce the environmental impact of our worldwide activities. Many of the steps we took have since become government legislation. The project included some very ambitious targets for improving the company’s environmental performance.

It gives me great pleasure to be here on the official opening of Singapore JewelFest 2007, the only consumer jeweler festival in Asia. This year, the event has grown bigger.

This festival has a history of more than twenty years, and during the past years, it has become a good platform of information exchange and jewelry exhibition. I believe this year’s JewelFest will offer a good opportunity to raise the image of Singapore’s jewelry industry.

As for the visitors, they will get to view the largest presentation of dazzling jewelry worth a total of $40 million. Jewelry is the top 3 shopping item purchased by visitors.

We’d like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for the unwavering support from all participating jewelers. I also wish this festival a great success!

Good morning, everybody,

Today I’ll give you a brief account of the development of telecommunication in Shanghai. In 1995, Shanghai became the first city in China to have 8-digit phone numbers. By the end of 1999, the total volume of the telephone switchboard had exceeded 4.5 million sets, and private telephone lines topped over 3.5 million, while mobile phone numbers kept well over 300 thousand. At present, Shanghai has phone connections with more than 100 countries and regions. Shanghai also went ahead of all cities in China in the field of Internet development and Internet services. The speed of Internet accession has greatly improved because of new technologies such as broadband link and ADSL. As a new and thriving industry, the future of Shanghai’s telecommunication industry is very promising.

Do you think that foreign languages are easier to learn if you have interest in their culture?

Yes, I think so, but I think they are easier to learn if the learners have a talent in language learning. I weigh this factor more than interest. The question is how people develop interest in an area. People are not born with interests in certain

fields, but people are born with special talents. This has been proved scientific. Many language learners don’t work hard but can still command beautiful language. That is because they are linguistically talented. I think that people have interest in the fields they are good at, not that they perform better because they have the interest. My thought is that I’m interested in English because I’m capable of doing it. Therefore, I think talent, particularly in language studies is more important than interest.

Today’s meeting will be a most unforgettable occasion for me, because it is my time to thank everyone for their support and encouragement in the past year during my tenure as president of this group. Serving as your president gave me the opportunity to work with everyone here, and I regard that as one of the greatest personal rewards I received during the last year. I remember how, at first, I was unsure of my ability to function effectively as your president. But now, with every member’s unselfish contribution to our work here, the job became a joy to me. Our successes this year are a direct result of the active participation of all the members in our group.

This has been a most memorable year for me and I hope our group continues

to grow in the future. Thank you.

Dear victims,

The earthquake which happened two weeks ago in Sichuan Province is an enormous disaster for our whole nation. It has caused both financial and life losses.

We are sorry about this accident. It’s a pity that many children lost their parents and many couples lost their lovers. I could not help but cry when hearing of the moving stories that happened during the disaster.

Our whole nation is a big family; every member would like to give a helping hand to the people who suffered from the earthquake. We must show our warm-heartedness and make donations to the stricken area so that their broken heart can be warmed.

A series of actions has been taken since the earthquake happened. I believe the stricken area will soon be restored with the soldiers and other warm-hearted people’s help. The future will be bright, cheer up!

Man’s life is a process of growing up, actually I’m standing here is a growth. If a person’s life must be constituted by various choices, then I grow up along with these choices. Once I hope I can study in a college in the future, however that’s passed, as you know I come here, now I wonder what will happen to me. I

will learn to become a man, who has a fine body, has independent thought, has the ability to judge right and wrong, has a perfect job.

I will put my personality with my interest and ability into my study; during this process I will combine learning with doing. If I can achieve this “future”, I think that I really grow up. How to say future? Maybe it’s a nice wish. Let’s make up our minds, stick to it and surely will enjoy our life.

Why do many people travel abroad? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

I travelled once to the U.S.A. and that was several years ago. I cherish this fantastic experience not only because I’ve got chances to see some of the world-famous tourist sites, but more importantly, the cross culture experience is interesting and it has actually helped me gain a better understanding about our own culture in relation to foreign culture. I guess this is the major advantage of foreign travel as well as the reason why people are usually fascinated by their travelling abroad. Most often, the expenses are too high for a majority of people to afford.
