Test 2

Short Speech

As everyone knows, English is very important today. It has been used

everywhere in the world. It has become the most common language on Internet and for international trade.

But I learn English not only because of its importance and its usefulness, but also because of my love for it. When I learn English, I can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world. When I read English novels, I can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the translation. When I speak English, I can feel confident from my words. When I write English, I can see the beauty which is not the same as our Chinese...

I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well.

Test 3

Short Speech

In the future, the possible transport system in China will be the three-dimensional public transport, with planes in the sky, maglev trains in the middle, vehicles on the ground, ships in the rivers and seas, and the subways underground. Private cars will go through a process from being encouraged to being limited because of the too large population in China that will make private cars a disaster to both traffic and environment. In the future, different kinds of public transports will be well organized and connected. For instance, the traveler will have a typical “public transport credit card ” with which he can take all

means of public transport without buying a ticket. He may take subways to the railway station or the airport and change the means directly without checking out at the subway station. All in all, the future public transport system will be more efficient and convenient.

Test 4

Short Speech

I major in Civil Engineering. As a matter of fact, it is not my favorite subject at all since I have been dreaming of becoming a software designer. Just because my scores of the college entrance examination did not reach the requirement of the major of Computer Science in my university, I was arranged to the Civil Engineering Department against my own will. Since it was and still is a common practice in China, I was not hurt and even felt a little proud of being enrolled in one of the top universities in our country.

Although the life in the university is much freer than that in the high school, I keep studying hard, for I know study is my fundamental task and it is not easy for my parents to support my higher education. I am the top student in my class and gain a scholarship each academic year. So I am proud that I have done well in my study.

Test 5

Short Speech

In China there is a popular game that children play. The game that comes to my mind is an old Chinese game called “The Eagle and the Chicks”. It is great fun, and easy to play.

When I was a child I played this game very often. The game needs at least five kids to start, and the more kids participate, the more fun it is. One child will play the “eagle” and another child as the “mother hen”. The rest will be the “chicks”, lining up behind the hen, with both hands holding on to the clothes of the chicks in front. In the game, the eagle tries to catch one of the chicks, who then takes his/her role as the eagle. The mother hen tries to protect her children with her arms stretched.

“The Eagle and the Chicks” enjoys great popularity among children in China. They definitely get great satisfaction in the excitement. In addition, they learn how to work as a team, which is an essential skill later in life.

Test 6

Short Speech

Do you think it is necessary to learn the foreign culture when learning English?

It depends on the expectations of the learner. For most people, English is just

considered a tool necessary for their work. They learn English because they need to read the foreign information on their business for reference. For example, an engineer learns English to understand the latest information in his area. Therefore, background knowledge about English culture isn’t strongly desired. However, for people who have higher expectations of their English proficiency, foreign culture is a vital element in knowledge storage. After all, language and culture are not two solely independent concepts. Anyway, learning foreign culture is highly appreciated and can very positively broaden one’s scope, not merely within the area of language learning.

Test 9

Short Speech

Dear friends, let me say something about the public transport in China. The public transport is essential in China since we don’t have so many private means of transport as in Western countries. The government has done a lot to promote the development of the infrastructure; of course, transport is included. As you may know, a highway to Tibet was built just after the establishment of the new China,

and then several main railways. There was even a slogan during the period of economic reform, which said, “ Building roads is the precondition of getting rich.” Now we have efficient bus networks in large cities and high-quality highways linking all the major cities and towns, the first maglev train is in motion, and last but not least, the booming airlines have added to the efficiency of public transport.

Test 12

Short Speech

How should people be promoted at work, through experience or

performance?

That’s a big issue in many companies. I’m not sure how I feel about this issue because I think both experience and performance are important. I mean if you’ve been working for a long time I think it’s natural that you would expect better treatment. On the other hand, I don’t think that it’s right that experienced people should put little care into their jobs just because they think that their jobs are well protected because of seniority. In my opinion, people should be promoted based on a combination of experience and performance. If they do not perform well, they may be demoted or even laid off, but if they do perform well, they will be promoted. Those people who perform well but have little experience should be promoted but not too high because this will only discourage those who have worked in a company for a long time.

Before finishing my speech, I would like to say, “For us teachers, being serious is our attitude, being professional and practical is the guarantee of our teaching efficiency. For us teachers, devoting to the people’s education is the greatest glory and dream forever.

That’s all. Thank you!

Test 17

Short Speech

As we all know, cooperation is very important. The importance of teamwork lies in the significant effect that it produces, especially when being properly applied and managed. It creates flexibility and coordination among members and enables them to use their talents and participate in making decisions.

It also provides a great deal of acceptance, understanding and physical interaction, which cannot be gained individually. That’s why members rely on

teamwork to get the feedback, attention and moral support which they constantly need. As a result, this leads to a great improvement in the quality of work produced, making the process more fun and less frustrating.

Test 18

Short Speech

Should children be punished in school?

My opinion is that children should be punished but not too often. I think the best way to deal with children is to guide them through their mistakes and to try to help them see their own errors. I mean, punishment should be used, but only when children believe that they can get away with something that they shouldn’t do. Punishment also cannot be the only way a child learns not to do something, otherwise he or she will only act out of fear of consequences without knowing whether it’s truly right or wrong. For example, if a boy passes noted in class and is only punished, he may stop it only as long as the teacher is around. But when he comes to another class with a teacher who’s not as strict, he might start doing it again. He hasn’t realized why it’s not the right thing to do.

Test 21

Short Speech

In 1920 the median age at the first marriage in the US was in the early twenties. However, this figure declined slowly but steadily over the course of the next 30 years to a trough of 20 in 1950. The age rose very slightly over the next 20 years to around 21 or 22 by 1970, but this was still lower than figures in the earlier part of

the century. Between 1970 and 1980 the median age rose a little, and then continued to rise over the next 20 years. By 2000 it had reached an 80-year high of over 25.

The figure for birth rates in the US over the same period shows a more dramatic change. In 1920 they were at a high over 30 per thousand people, but had declined by 1940 to the low twenties. This figure increased slightly over the next 10 years and peaked in the high twenties in 1950, but then declined steadily over the next 30 years to a low of about 19 in 1980. This figure had not changed much by 2000, when it was continuing to be steady at around 18.

One Idiom A Day Keeps Bad English Away—Saying Thank You

Thank you may be the most useful word in the English language. There are

many ways to say thank you; this section gives you the most common. Sometimes language learners are confused about when to use the word thank and when to use thanks. There are lots of common and acceptable responses to thanks, shown in the next section.

Thanks a million. Thanks a bunch. Thanks a lot. Thanks much (or loads).

Many thanks. I can’t thank you enough.

Test 26

Short Speech

Do you know how advertisement influences people? On the one hand, it offers a lot of information about a certain product or brand. It leads the trend and

direction of purchase. Besides, good advertisements can also be considered as a form of art. On the other hand, there are some fake advertisements. Those are the advertisements which contain false information. In other words, they lie in the advertisements. When people buy things because of the false advertisements and then realize they have been cheated, they may lose confidence in other products. If this kind of thing continues to happen, it would cause a vicious circle. And another thing, some advertisements involve sex or violence which may have a bad effect on children.

Test 27

Short Speech

Do advertisements bring great influence to children and their parents?

Yes. Advertisements supply children and their parents with information and keep them in touch with the latest trends and fashion. But some scenes in advertisements are not suitable for children to watch, such as the ones involving sex or violence. These kinds of advertisements certainly have a bad influence on children. Sometimes children want to buy a certain product after watching its advertisement and their parents have to buy it. This may lead to children getting the bad habit of purchasing and wasting money. They may think that they can get whatever they like. But if their parents do not buy them the thing that they like, it may cause tension between the two generations.

Test 28

Short Speech

My favourite animals are dogs. They are said to be one of the brainiest animals in the world. They can help people in many ways. They can lead the blind, sniff out drugs and even rescue accident victims. Helpful as they are, most of the dogs are not very big. Oftentimes, dogs I see stand no more than half a metre and weigh no more than 200 pounds. I like dogs very much. They can usually read the emotions of their owners. They can tell whether their owners are happy or upset just by judging from the owners’ voice. In addition, dogs are very loyal to their owners. Stories abound in which dogs saved their owners at the cost of their own. Indeed, they are humans’ pals. I love them.

It’s hard to pray for a lot of people at the same time, but I want my prayers to reach each individual audience of my program. My strongest prayer of all is a prayer of thanksgiving—thank you for being a part of this world and making it richer. May you take good care of yourself and of those you love, as you all deserve.

It achieves new success every year.

Let me begin by thanking you, Mr. Levin, for your kind invitation and the opportunity to come to Yale to meet young friends and teachers of this world-renowned university.

Coming to the Yale campus, with its distinctive academic flavor, and looking at the eager young faces in the audience, I cannot but recall my great experience studying at Tsinghua University in Beijing 40 years ago. Indeed, what happens during one’s school year will influence his whole life. I still benefit greatly from the instruction and my interaction with other students.

Yale is renowned for its long history, unique way of teaching and excellence in academic pursuit. I sincerely hope that Yale will produce more talent and contribute further to the social and economic development of the United States and the cause of human progress.

Test 34

Short Speech

What is the most important and hardest housework in a family? I think it should be raising a baby. As we all know, the policy of birth control has been carried out in China for decades. Most of the families have only one child, which makes raising babies extremely important housework in Chinese families. In

Chinese culture, children are considered as the hope and continuation of the family. My mother told me that since I was born, I have been the centre of her life. And inevitably a heavy yoke, but a happy yoke, she said, has been put on her neck since then. I was quite poor in health when I was a baby, and my parents often took me to the hospital at midnight. And what’s more, I wouldn’t go to sleep when I didn’t feel well unless Mother held me in her arms. So from my mother I get to know that it is really hard to bring up a child.

Test 35

Short Speech

What do you think of the 3 Gorges project?

I think there are two sides to this issue. On one hand, it will probably provide a lot of needed electrical energy. Take the area of Chongqing for example. It’s a growing city but it’s hampered by a lack of energy and it needs to be able to feed more electrical energy to some of the poorer provinces to the west of it, particularly Tibet. Also I think it will make navigation easier along the Changjiang river and that will be good for our industries. On the other hand, I think it creates some hardships for those people living in that region, since they must be relocated and give up the area where they have lived for so long. Also, we must be very careful to make sure there is no environmental damage since there are a lot of precious lives that depend on the river.

Test 36

Short Speech

What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a celebrity? Being a celebrity means the society has recognized your achievement, which means they have established a kind of social status. Celebrities hold privileges, resources and people’s admiration in their hands. They make money much easier than ordinary people. Those are all the advantages. But they have acquired them at the expense of their private life. They are forever in the focus of limelight. Meanwhile, the public have almost zero tolerance toward the celebrities’ mistakes. They are not allowed to fail the public’s expectation. Once they make a mistake, even a trivial one, it will be exemplified and spread far and wide. No wonder that some celebrities complain that they would rather be ordinary people.

Test 37

Short Speech

What qualities do you think are important for a successful or good film?

That’s hard to say. A good film doesn’t have to follow a certain formula. I think there are all kinds of good films and they don’t have to be a certain style. I think the basic qualities are commitment and professional acting. I can’t stand those actors who star in movies with little concern about how to make their

characters seem like real people. I think that the cinematography is quite important because without it you are just resenting images without concern for the meaning they convey. If there is no concern for the way it is shot then you might as well read a book, because the main features of films that make it pleasing are its setting and artistic filming. These days, I think one criterion for a successful film seems to be just good special effects, but I don’t care much about that.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to Quad! My name is Gray Milton and I’d be glad to introduce our company to you. Founded in 1936, Quad is located in Huntingdon, in the south of England. Quad is a company that makes stereo systems and loudspeakers. Its loudspeakers are unique. In the 1950’s, when most loudspeakers looked like wooden boxes, Quad launched a speaker that looked like a radiator. It has a simple policy, to manufacture products that last forever. While most hi-fi companies launch new products every year, Quad’s gone on for years. Its original R Series speakers, for example, were in production for 28 years. In the 1990s, Quad joined up with three other famous names to form the International Audio Group. Together these four now make up an impressive and important hi-fi company.

Test 41

Short Speech

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It’s a pleasure to give you a brief introduction to American Yard Sales.

Yard sales are very popular during weekends in spring and summer in America. For example, on one weekend you can find announcements for almost 200 yard sales around Washington D.C. Early in the morning all the things to be sold are

carried out of the house. Almost anything can be sold at the yard sale: used furniture, old clothes, CDs or paintings. Sometimes there are more clothes than anything else. People can buy things at a much lower price than in stores. Some people enjoy hunting in the yard sale and sometimes they can find something really valuable. Yard sales are a very small part of what experts call the underground economy in America.

Test 42

Short Speech

Good morning. Today we’re going to look at ICI’s environmental programs and environmental performance since 1990. I’d like to begin with some background to ICI’s environmental projects. Then we’ll go on to look at our Challenge 2000 project. And finally, we’ll turn to the results of these programs.

Now the story really began in the 1980s when people started becoming more concerned about environmental issues. The first ICI environmental project was a result of the realization that, as a major player in the chemicals industry, ICI would have to address these growing public concerns. So, in 1990 we presented our shareholders with a program to reduce the environmental impact of our worldwide activities. Many of the steps we took have since become government legislation. The project included some very ambitious targets for improving the company’s environmental performance.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to be here on the official opening of Singapore JewelFest 2007, the only consumer jeweler festival in Asia. This year, the event has grown bigger.

This festival has a history of more than twenty years, and during the past years, it has become a good platform of information exchange and jewelry exhibition. I believe this year’s JewelFest will offer a good opportunity to raise the image of Singapore’s jewelry industry.

As for the visitors, they will get to view the largest presentation of dazzling jewelry worth a total of $40 million. Jewelry is the top 3 shopping item purchased by visitors.

We’d like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for the unwavering support from all participating jewelers. I also wish this festival a great success!

Good morning, everybody,

Today I’ll give you a brief account of the development of telecommunication in Shanghai. In 1995, Shanghai became the first city in China to have 8-digit phone numbers. By the end of 1999, the total volume of the telephone switchboard had exceeded 4.5 million sets, and private telephone lines topped over 3.5 million, while mobile phone numbers kept well over 300 thousand. At present, Shanghai has phone connections with more than 100 countries and regions. Shanghai also went ahead of all cities in China in the field of Internet development and Internet services. The speed of Internet accession has greatly improved because of new technologies such as broadband link and ADSL. As a new and thriving industry, the future of Shanghai’s telecommunication industry is very promising.

Do you think that foreign languages are easier to learn if you have interest in their culture?

Yes, I think so, but I think they are easier to learn if the learners have a talent in language learning. I weigh this factor more than interest. The question is how people develop interest in an area. People are not born with interests in certain

fields, but people are born with special talents. This has been proved scientific. Many language learners don’t work hard but can still command beautiful language. That is because they are linguistically talented. I think that people have interest in the fields they are good at, not that they perform better because they have the interest. My thought is that I’m interested in English because I’m capable of doing it. Therefore, I think talent, particularly in language studies is more important than interest.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today’s meeting will be a most unforgettable occasion for me, because it is my time to thank everyone for their support and encouragement in the past year during my tenure as president of this group. Serving as your president gave me the opportunity to work with everyone here, and I regard that as one of the greatest personal rewards I received during the last year. I remember how, at first, I was unsure of my ability to function effectively as your president. But now, with every member’s unselfish contribution to our work here, the job became a joy to me. Our successes this year are a direct result of the active participation of all the members in our group.

This has been a most memorable year for me and I hope our group continues

to grow in the future. Thank you.

Dear victims,

The earthquake which happened two weeks ago in Sichuan Province is an enormous disaster for our whole nation. It has caused both financial and life losses.

We are sorry about this accident. It’s a pity that many children lost their parents and many couples lost their lovers. I could not help but cry when hearing of the moving stories that happened during the disaster.

Our whole nation is a big family; every member would like to give a helping hand to the people who suffered from the earthquake. We must show our warm-heartedness and make donations to the stricken area so that their broken heart can be warmed.

A series of actions has been taken since the earthquake happened. I believe the stricken area will soon be restored with the soldiers and other warm-hearted people’s help. The future will be bright, cheer up!

Man’s life is a process of growing up, actually I’m standing here is a growth. If a person’s life must be constituted by various choices, then I grow up along with these choices. Once I hope I can study in a college in the future, however that’s passed, as you know I come here, now I wonder what will happen to me. I

will learn to become a man, who has a fine body, has independent thought, has the ability to judge right and wrong, has a perfect job.

I will put my personality with my interest and ability into my study; during this process I will combine learning with doing. If I can achieve this “future”, I think that I really grow up. How to say future? Maybe it’s a nice wish. Let’s make up our minds, stick to it and surely will enjoy our life.

Why do many people travel abroad? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

I travelled once to the U.S.A. and that was several years ago. I cherish this fantastic experience not only because I’ve got chances to see some of the world-famous tourist sites, but more importantly, the cross culture experience is interesting and it has actually helped me gain a better understanding about our own culture in relation to foreign culture. I guess this is the major advantage of foreign travel as well as the reason why people are usually fascinated by their travelling abroad. Most often, the expenses are too high for a majority of people to afford.
