Bored with your life? Dreaming of something different? I always wonder what life would be like400 kmabove my head. That's where the International Space Station orbits the earth, with six astronauts living and working on board, for months at a time.

How do they sleep? They spend the night floating in a sleeping bag inside a small cubicle (小隔间) on the ceiling. American astronaut Sunita Williams explains, “It's like a little phone booth, but it's pretty comfortable and it doesn't matter if I turn overand sleep upside down. I don't have any sensation (感觉) in my head that tells me I'm upside down.”

Brushing your teeth in a place where you can't have a tap or a sink can be a challenge. Can you imagine the mess that running water would make in zero gravity? Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield uses a straw to put a big blob of water from a sealed bag onto an ordinary toothbrush and adds a little toothpaste which he has to swallow when he's done.

Daily exercise is essential. The lack of gravity makes bones more fragile and muscles lose strength — so astronauts are encouraged to work out for at least two hours a day.

The role of astronauts in the International Space Station is to act as lab technicians for scientists back on earth. So they spend their time maintaining their environment and performing and monitoring experiments in a confined space about the size of a Boeing 747. Almost every task is carefully planned by mission control — although most astronauts spend their first days losing things until they get used to sticking everything they use to the walls with Velcro, duct tape (强力胶带) or clips (夹子).

One of their most valued perks (额外待遇) is the view from “the office”, dominated by that gigantic blue ball down there, sitting in the darkness of space. Wow! Absolutely breathtaking! 1. When they sleep upside down, the astronauts willnot get dizzy because ________. A. they don't feel it B. they sleep in the daytime C. they sleep in special sleeping bags

D. they are trained to adapt to the conditions of weightlessness

2. What parts become weak if astronauts don't exercise? A. Their teeth and bones. B. Their brains and bones. C. Their bones and muscles. D. Their teeth and muscles.

3. What is the passage mainly about? A. The Problems We Met in Space. B. Living and Working in Space. C. How to Become an Astronaut. D. The International Space Station.

Once small farmers in Masii, a remote village in Kenya, have picked their crops, all they can do is wait until a buyer trucks through. The system works fairly well for beans and corn, but mangoes-the area’s other main crop-spoil (腐烂) more quickly. If the trader is late, they rot.

However, a simple coating could change that. A company, SmartTech, has created a product that doubles the shelf life of fresh produce, enabling farmers to access far-off, larger markets. More time forfresh produce on grocers’ shelves also means less food waste-a $2.6 trillion problem, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

James Rogers, CEO of SmartTech, wanted to solve the problem for food much in the same way that oxide barriers preventing rust (锈) have achieved for steel. Fortunately, researchers have found when plants made the jump from water to land, they developed cutin(蜡质), a barrier which is made of fatty acids that link together to form a seal around the plant, helping keep water in.

The cutin was such a grand strategy that today you’ll still find it across the plant kingdom. SmartTech discovered through researches that an orange can last longer than a strawberry not so much because of the thickness of its skin, but because of the difference in the arrangement of those cutin molecules (分子)on the surface. After extensive trials, Rogers and his team developed a natural and tasteless protective coating from plant material-stems, leaves and skins. The product extends the sweet spot between ripening and rot. And best of all, the treated produce doesn’t require refrigeration.

“SmartTech has huge potential to turn poor farmers in Africa into commercial farmers,” says Rogers. “That means more money in pockets, and more food in stomachs.” But whether the company can cost-effectively reach

small farmers in far-off areas still remains a challenge.

4. The author mentions the small farmers in Kenya to ________. A. stress their need for preserving produce B. show their challenge in harvesting crops C. express their wish to reach larger markets D. evaluate their loss caused by slow transport 5. What can we learn about SmartTech’s product? A. It is financially supported by FAO. B. It is intended to replace refrigeration. C. It is designed to thicken produce’s skin. D. It is based on plants’own defence system. 6. What will James Rogers probably focus on next? A. How to expand farms. B. How to earn more money. C. How to produce more tasty food. D. How to profit farmers in remote area.

7. The main purpose of the passage is to ________. A. promote a product B. present a technology C. advertise SmartTech D. introduce James Rogers

I cried the first time I saw the Notre Dame(巴黎圣母院)years ago. I'd waited my entire life to see this great French architecture, and experienced it in its full glory on a bright sunny day. Last night, I again cried for the centuries-old church while watching it burn.

I hadn't expected to spend my evening that way. My friend and I were having dinner at a cafe a block or so away from the Notre Dame, choosing to skip going inside with the intention to go back the next day.

However, we heard that it caught fire, so we left the cafe and ran towards the church, following heavy smoke from it, and soon we joined a nearly silent crowd. Some were praying, some were crying, but most were staring in disbelief at the disaster happening before us. The fire continued to get worse. About 400 firefighters were working to control the fire. We could see their flashlights shining as they inspected the front from a balcony.

The Notre Dame is part of the heartbeat ofParis, I reflected on the experiences I've had there, from attending

a bread market out front to admiring the beautiful windows and architecture inside. It is a spot that helps makeParismagical. And here we were, watching it burn down. It was too much to handle, but it was impossible to look away.

About 9:30 pm, the gathered crowd spontaneously(自发地)began to sing Hymns(圣歌)to the church. We sang along with the group, feeling at once less like tourists and more like members of them. I hadn't imagined all that before.

For hundreds of years, the Notre Dame hasseen the most joyous and the most terrible moments in the lives of both France and her people. And when everyone was able to become one emotional force, it showed that even in her darkest hour, the Notre Dame was still there to bring us all together. 8. Why did the author cry for the Notre Dame for the first time?

A. She was touched by its greatness. B. She was sorrowful to watch it burn. C. She was regretful for missing its glory. D. She was excited about French cultures. 9. What was the author doing when the Notre Dame caught fire?

A. Heading for a faraway cafe. B. Visiting a church with a friend. C. Eating nearby with a friend. D. Wandering along the street alone. 10. What can we know about the fire scene? A. People expressed their sadness in different ways. B. People were nervously rushing in different directions. C. Hundreds of volunteers joined in putting out the fire. D. Firefighters kept people away with shining flashlights. 11. What impressed the author most?

A. The church allowed visitors to gaingreat experiences. B. Many foreign tourists became members of the church. C. The church survived disasters for hundreds of years. D. People were brought together to sing to the church.

A Chinese space mining company has designed a robot that can capture waste material left behind by spacecraft in outer space with a big net.

The state-run Xinhua news agency recently reported that the robot launched on the government's Long March 6 rocket along with several satellites. The robot will also investigate deep space to observe small objects in

the universe. The 30-kilogram robot, called NEO-01 , was developed by Origin Space. Pounded in 2019 and based in the southern Chinese tech hub(技术中心)Shenzhen, Origin Space has been devoted to exploring and using space resources, according to the company. The company says the robot will lead the way for future technologies capable of mining on asteroids(小行星).

The world's first asteroid mining company, Planetary Resources, was established in 2009. Since then, more than 12 businesses around the world have entered the industry, including 3D Systems of the United States and Japan's Astroscale. Astroscale's technology uses magnets (磁铁)to gather up space waste. But a report on the Origin Space website says NEO-01 will use a net to capture waste and then bum it. Thousands of satellites have been launched worldwide. As they are used too long, many end up as waste and put other operating satellites at risk.

Su Meng is the founder of Origin Space. He said the company plans to launch many space telescopes and more spacecraft to begin the first for-profit mining of asteroids by 2045. Su added that NEO-01 will serve as a prototype (雏形)of future space mining robots, which can use rich mineral resources on asteroids to support the development of the space industry.

The Xinhua news agency reported that China was increasing efforts to land a spacecraft on a near-Earth asteroid to collectmaterials. China is also speeding up a plan to build a defense system against near-Earth asteroids. The country aims to follow Russia and the United States in becoming a major space power by 2030. 12. Which of the following can correctly describe NEO-01? A. It weighs 60 kilograms.

B. It was created by Planetary Resources. C. It will be burnt after finishing its mission. D. It is mainly used to catch space waste. 13. What can be inferred from the text?

A. China will be the most powerful in space by 2030. B. Origin Space will open more mines on asteroids. C. It is those useless satellites that make space waste. D. The robot will look into deep space for more waste. 14. What does Su Meng think of NEO-01 ?

A. It is promising and rewarding. B. It has benefited the space industry. C. It's a long way to produce it. D. It'll help make money for the company.

15. What can be the best title for the text? A. NEO-01 , A Smart Robot Used in Space B. A Chinese Robot Can Catch Space Waste C. A New Robot Makes China a SpacePower D. NEO-01 , the Pioneer of Future Space Robots 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Have you ever woken up worrying about an unfinished project, an email that you forgot to send, or a meeting which you didn't have a chance to schedule?____16____It turns out that we just need to tell our brains when we will do what we need to do so they don't annoy us.
