There is a saying “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” What one individual considers beautiful may not be beautiful to another. When we talk about beauty in people, we often refer to their physical attractiveness. Of course, a beautiful or handsome face is pleasant to look at. But to me, beauty is not only something that pleases the eyes, but also pleases the other senses and the mind. I think true beauty makes you see beyond the lovely sight. It will give you insight or realization of something interesting beyond just the outward appearance.
The most memorable “beautiful people” are those who have attractive personalities behind the pretty faces. In one of my previous classes, there were two beautiful girls, Sue and Lin. Both had almost perfect faces and slender figures. But Lin was used to getting her way. She felt that her looks could help her get anything she wanted, especially among the boys. Sue, on the other hand, treated her beauty in a matter-of-fact way and she was nice to everyone. She was also a member of the debating team. Her personality was mostly accepted by others and it made her a more outstanding beauty than Lin.
Inner beauty is another kind of beauty that attracts people greatly. People who have this kind of beauty have attained (达到) inner peace. They care about their fellow-men, and try to right the injustices in this world. Two well-known personalities who exemplify (以…为典型) this are Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa. Mandela is willing to sacrifice his life and freedom to obtain equal right for the blacks in South Africa. Mother Theresa’s mission (使命) is to help the poorest of the world’s poor. This inner look makes the world a better place.
46. When we talk about beauty in people, we often only refer to __________. A. “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” B. something beyond the lovely sight C. their attractive appearance D. the other senses
47. According to the passage, why did the author think Sue was more beautiful than Lin?
A. Because Sue had perfect face.
B. Because Sue was highly thought of by others. C. Because Sue had slender figure.
D. Because Lin treated her beauty in a matter-of-fact way. 48. What’s the author’s opinion on beauty? A. Beauty is a perfect face. B. Beauty is something that pleases the eyes.
C. Beauty is an attractive personality behind the pretty faces. D. Inner beauty doesn’t attract people.

An American educational expert, Frederick M. Hess, says that a long summer vacation doesn’t make sense in today’s world.
This summer, 50 million kids will spend much time talking online, watching TV, playing video games and asking older brothers or sisters to take them to the supermarket. They will also be putting their academic futures at risk.
During much of the 20th century, many Americans worked in factories that did not need a college degree but still offered a high salary. Also, in the 19th century, there was no air condition. And poor hygiene (卫生) meant that crowded schools had health risks.
Things have changed. For today’s students, academic skills are key to future success. Many countries don’t give kids an American-style summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive (连续的) weeks of vacation. Most American school districts offer up to 13 weeks. To compete in global marketplace, Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors.
Summer vacation also causes challenges for today’s families. In the 1960s, more than 60% of families had a stay-at-home mum. Now, two-thirds of American children live families where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be more burden than break. Someone must watch the kids.
But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement. Scientist have found that disadvantaged students lose important ground in the summertime.
A school year can allow time-limited teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons. Schools would have more time for sports, languages, music and the arts. 43. Before the 20th century, a long summer vacation might ______. A. reduce income for Americans B. reduce health risks for students C. cause career failure for Americans
D. cause loss in global market for America
44. How long does an American-style summer vacation last? A. No more than two months. B. Less than three months. C. As long as three months. D. As long as four months.
45. According to the text, who will benefit from a long school year? A. American students, teachers and parents. B. American students, parents and shop owners.
C. American students, parents and international competitors. D. American students, teachers and international competitors.
46. How many reasons did the writer give to support his/her opinion? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. C

If the mosquito likes you, she lands on your body without letting you know. She bites you so quickly and quietly that you may not feel anything different. After she bites, you will have an itch(痒) on your body because she puts something from her mouth together with your blood. By the time the itching begins, and she has flown away. And then what happens? Well, after her delicious dinner, the mosquito feels tired. She just wants to find a place to have a good rest. If you get into the forest with your friends, stay with them always. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you really get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends—let them find you by staying in one place.
There is another way to help your friends or other nearby people to find you. Give them a signal (信号) by shouting or whistling (吹口哨) three times. Any signal given three times is a call for help.
Keep up shouting or whistling always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They give you two shouts, two whistles, or two gun-shots (声). When someone gives you a signal, it is an answer to a call for help.
If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house---cover up to the holes with branches (树枝) with lots of leaves. Make yourself a soft bed with leaves and grass.
What should you do if you get hungry or need drinking water? You would have
to leave your little house to look for a river. Don't just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back.
