They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon: on foot, on mules(骡子) or by air. We chose the first. Up early, my husband and I and our three children couldn’t wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail.

As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn’t help noticing that the other tourists weren’t like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed. As the sun rose higher, Arizona’s famous heat seemed to roast(烘烤) us. There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, our legs were like jelly. The next day, after we’d had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the Canyon – by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world. We called to each other excitedly as the place took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed(翻转) the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground. I shouted,―STOP, TAKE US BACK!‖ When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.

As I said, there are there ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I’d suggest a fourth: buy yourself a good magazine like National Geographic. That way, you can see the Canyon, without fear or tiredness.

51 Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph? A. They made a careful preparation before the trip. B. The children were more joyful than their parents. C. Bright Angel Trial was not as lovely as they expected. D. The summer heat prevented them from enjoying the view.

52.The underlined expression ―our legs were like jelly‖ probably means________. A. we were weak B. we were unhappy C. we were dissatisfied D. we were disappointed 53.Which of the following best describes their Canyon trip by air? A. It proved to be frightening. B. It was more comfortable. C. It turned out to be exciting. D. It made each of them tired.

54.We can infer(推断) from the passage that________. A. experiencing the Canyon on mules would be the best way B. one needs to dress less when visiting the Grand Canyon C. the writer was not serious when she made the suggestion D. the whole family narrowly escaped from the air accident

Dear Editor,

I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to Smithville. We moved here from New York City, so I am accustomed to (习惯于)reading excellent newspapers such as the New York Times. In fact, we still have the Times delivered on Sundays. The entire family enjoys reading the recipes(食谱) in the magazine, as well as the ―Styles‖ section.

The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story. I’ve never read an article that doesn’t contain at least three or four spelling or grammatical errors(mistakes). For instance, in last week’s issue, you misspelled the word ―secretary‖ used a singular verb with a plural noun, and used ―it’s‖. as a possessive(所有格). And that was just in the lead story! In case you never went to a primary school, ―it’s‖ means ―It is ‖. It’s not a possessive adjective !

It’s a pity that this tiny little hick(乡下的,老土的) town has only one newspaper, because I’d like to have an alternative (可选择的) to the rag you publish. I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can’t spell correctly, how can you get your facts right?

I’ve been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. Please cancel(取消) my subscription(订阅). And buy yourself a dictionary. Sincerely,

Jane Z. Jones

55.Which phrase from the passage shows the writer’s prejudice(偏见)? A. a possessive adjective

B. three or four spelling or grammatical errors C. tiny little hick town

D. reading the recipes in the magazine

56.The author’s tone(语调,口气) in the passage can best be described as _______ A. happy B. angry C. sympathetic(同情) D. humorous 57.Which statement in the following is a FACT? A. It’s a pity this tiny little hick town is not fit to live

B. The Times is great, but the Gazette brings us nothing good C. We still have the Times delivered on Sundays. D. You never went to a primary school

58.The underlined phrase in the last paragraph means that _________ A. the writer wants to express his dissatisfaction with the newspaper

B. the writer wants to see a doctor for there is something wrong with his chest C. the writer wants to put an end to talking about the newspaper D. the writer thinks the poor newspaper has damaged his health

C

It is time for us as parents to teach our children the right way to dress. I am not saying that kids have to dress like the businessmen. I believe in dressing respectably.

The saying ― I want my children to be able to express themselves‖ is wrong. They can express themselves in a better way. If we allow them to talk to us and we are open to listening to them, they can express themselves easily.

I have two boys. However, I have expressed my idea to others about how girls are dressing these days. A person said to me,: ―You need a girl. Then you would understand.‖ I do understand, and that is why my girl would not dress in a short skirt.

As fathers, it is our duty to teach our children to be respectable in the way they act, and also in the way they should dress.

Most parents need to take responsibility and teach their children the respectable ways of dressing. Don’t think so much about what is popular.

It is also our duty to protect our children. We do this by teaching them to dress well and respect others.

59.The writer wrote this article to tell __________ A. kids to dress respectably

B. parents to teach kids to dress respectably C. kids to express themselves D. fathers to protect their children

60.The writer thinks it’s wrong for parents ___________ A. to believe that kids can express themselves

B. to talk to their kids C. to listen to their kids

61.The writer’s idea he expressed to others is how______ A. he talks with his daughter B. girls are dressing

C. he is open to listening to his kids

D. he takes the responsibility of teaching his kids. D
