Automobiles were originally developed in Europe. German engineers Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz built the first successful gasoline engines in 1885. After 1900, however, the Automobile United States became a leader in automobile production. The first cars were handmade and very expensive. Only people in rich cities could afford them. The first company to make gasoline cars in the U.S. was the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. Then, in 1901, Ransom E. Olds Began mass-producing his car, the Oldsmobile. In 1913 Henry Ford made great strides in the mass production of cars by using an assembly line in his factory. Mass production meant that each car was less expensive to make. Now car ownership was affordable for the average person. By 1916 there were more than one million cars in the United States.
The automobile gave people the freedom to travel anywhere there were passable roads. Families that lived great distance apart could travel by automobile to visit each other. People could visit places they had never seen before.
Before the mass production of cars, people lived close to work. Their means of transportation included walking, riding a bicycle, using a horse and carriage, or taking a train. The automobile gave people the ability to live farther away from work. The result was that gradually people moved out of the cities to the less crowded suburbs.
The automobile industry created millions of jobs. The jobs were not just in the auto factories, where the cars were assembled. Workers were needed to make auto parts, run gas stations and repair shops, and work at new motels and restaurants that served people who traveled by car. Jobs became available at car rental companies. People were needed to build roads. These jobs and many others still exist because of the automobile.

There is plenty of beauty in Shanghai. Even though there are a lot of people( and cars and trucks and pollution), the city is great! For example, I love many of the modern skyscrapers(摩天大楼). I also love the old temples(), and the wonderful tree-lined streets.
But some people in Shanghai just don’t stop to think about how beautiful their city is and how they can help to keep it that way. Or maybe they just don’t care?
There are a lot of litterbugs(随意扔垃圾的人) in Shanghai, people who throw their rubbish everywhere. I’m talking about people of all ages-old people, middle-aged people, high school and middle school students. Why don’t they just find a rubbish bin(垃圾箱) since there are many of them on every street?
If you want to turn a place that is very beautiful into something that is very ugly, just cover it with rubbish. A pleasant tree-lined street can look like a garbage dump(垃圾场) at once!
What should we do with people that litter? I hope when we catch them doing it, we bring them to the centre of the city, and throw the things they dropped at them! Perhaps that would make them stop and think before they litter again.
I do have a small suggestion for China’s middle-school students. Next time you are about to throw something on the ground, stop and think about how beautiful your city is. Then find a rubbish bin and ―pretend you are Yao Ming‖-dunk(扣篮) the rubbish in the basket and score 2 points for the environment! 54. The first paragraph mainly tells us__________ .
A. people in Shanghai are fond of high buildings
B. streets are so narrow that cars are crowded on roads
C. Shanghai is a nice city with plenty of beauty everywhere D. there are a lot of cars and trucks and people in Shanghai 55. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. All the people in Shanghai don’t find a rubbish-bin to throw their rubbish into
it.
B. Only middle-school students should throw rubbish into a rubbish-bin. C. There are so many rubbish bins on every street that people can’t stand(忍受)them.
D. Some people in Shanghai are thinking about how they can keep the city beautiful.
56. From the passage we can infer that_________ . A. people in Shanghai always love its nature
B. environment protection is very important to Shanghai C. Shanghai is a very beautiful international city D. throwing rubbish everywhere is an impolite sign.

When you cut your skin, you bleed(流血). If a person loses a lot of blood, he will become ill and may die. Blood is very important. People have always known that. At one time, some people even drank blood to make them strong!
When doctors understand how blood goes around inside the body, they try ways of giving blood to people who need it. They take blood from the healthy people and give it to people who need it. This is called ―blood transfusion‖(输血). The blood goes from the arm of the healthy person into the arm of the sick person.
But there are two problems. First, it does not always work. Sometimes people die when they have blood transfusion. Later, doctors find that we do not all have the same kind of blood. There are four groups—O, A, B and AB. We all have blood of one of these groups. They also find that they can give any kind of blood to people of group AB. But they find that they must give A-group blood to A-group people and B-group blood to B-group people. I have O-group blood and the doctor told me that I could give blood to anyone else safely.
There is another problem. To give blood of the right kind, doctors have to find a person of the right blood group. Often they can not find a person in time. If they have a way to keep the blood until someone needs it, they can always have the right kind of blood. At first they find they can keep it in bottles for fifteen to twenty days. They do this by making it very cold. Then they find how to keep it longer. In the end they find a way of keeping blood for a very long time.
We call a place where we keep money a ―bank‖. We call a place where we keep blood a ―blood bank‖. One day, when you grow up, you may decide to give blood to a ―blood bank‖. In this way you may stop someone from dying. Or perhaps one day you may become ill. You may need blood. The ―blood bank‖ will give it to you. 370words
55. From the passage, we learn that sometimes people die when they have blood transfusions
because they_______. A. are unhealthy people B. are AB-group people C. have lost a lot of blood
D. are not given the right kind of blood 56. Which of the following is true?
A. The writer has never had a blood transfusion. B. The writer can give blood to B-group people. C. Doctors can give any kind of blood to the writer. D. The writer has the same kind of blood as his father.
57. From the last paragraph of the passage, we learn that_______. A. the writer thinks it’s good to give blood to a ―blood bank‖ B. we may become ill if we give blood to a ―blood bank‖ C. many people died because they lost a lot of blood D. blood is more important than money

It’s true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Language skills will improve and it may be easier to find a job.
But there are problems that should be considered. Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language and getting used to a different culture.

On a rubbish run to work, I was greeted with a sight that made me both sad and angry. On the top of the pile (堆) of rubbish sat a small dog. He was too high up to get down, and there was no way that he could have climbed up by himself. He had been thrown out with the rubbish by some sick-minded person.
I took him back to my workplace and then home with me. I didn’t want to take him to the lost animal society. However, later that evening, my boss heard that someone had lost their dog and gave them my number. I was very surprised when the dog’s owner phoned me.
She came straight over to fetch him and was very thankful for what I’d done. The dog was sitting on an electric blanket (毯子) happily playing with a ball when she arrived.
Maybe she’d been putting her rubbish into bags and had left one on the floor. The little dog had jumped in there, and without realizing where he was, she’d tied the bag and dropped it off at the collection point. Luckily, he was able to find his way out somehow, and had found himself high up.
It made me feel very silly for jumping to such a wrong conclusion. It was obvious (明显的) that she loved her dog very much, and I felt sorry for what I’d been thinking about its owner all afternoon.
Now I’m never sure that something happened in a certain way, no matter how obvious it appears. And when I hear people drawing a conclusion without the facts, I tell them about the dog on the rubbish pile.
54. How did the dog come to the rubbish pile probably?
A. He was thrown there by his owner. B. He climbed there on his own. C. He was driven there by someone. D. He followed the writer there. 55. The writer brought the dog home because ______.
A. she didn’t know whose he was B. she was waiting for the owner C. she wanted to keep him home D. she’d like to give him to the boss 56. What is the best conclusion we can draw from the story?
A. Everyone takes pity on lost animals. B. There are really sick-minded people.
C. We should correct mistakes in time. D. Facts must come before conclusions.

Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes(基因)decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you're going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.
No doubt you're wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There's no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty.
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you're at now, how you've been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don't be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰)during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later ---between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.
You'll usually begin to notice that you're growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty. (298) 54. What does the word ―puberty‖ mean ________. A. A period that you are a young child
B. A period that your body looks like a baby C. A period that you develop your habits D. A period that your body changes quickly
55. If you want to know how fast and how tall you should grow, ________.
A. you should have enough exercise B. you can ask doctors for help C. you should save the environment D. You can record your growth during puberty
56. After reading the passage, we can infer ________? A. how good it is to be a doctor B. how much sleep time we need C. why genes can’t decide everything D. what healthy diet is

New rules and behaviour standards for middle school students came out in March Middle School is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won't only have high marks. They will also be kids who don't dye(染)their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules. Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else's work on an exam? Don't do it again! That's not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don't tell your parents you have done homework.
Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone.
Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself.
Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you'll discover Earth II someday. Don't look down on new ideas. Everyone's ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.
Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don't let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know.
Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren't for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Can't you find any good Web sites for children? Here are some:

There were two McDonald’s – Mac and Dick – and they were brothers. In 1948 they owned a restaurant in California. They liked working in the restaurant, but they got tired of the customers(顾客) ordering so many different things to eat.
―If we gave customers a smaller menu(菜单), we could make some of the food before they came, and they wouldn’t have to wait so long for their meals,‖ said one of the brothers. The other brother agreed and said, ―If we made the customers come to the counter(柜台), we wouldn’t need any waiters and waitresses(女服务员). We could also use plastic plates so there wouldn’t be any washing-up.‖
These were such good ideas that the McDonald’s brothers used them, and the customers were very pleased. They got their meals very quickly – in less than a minute – and they paid only 15 cents(分) for hamburgers and 10 cents for fries(油炸食品). The first McDonald’s restaurant had no seats for customers to sit on. This meant that people had to take their food away, and that no one had to clean up any tables after them.
Then a man called Ray Kroc came to the brothers and asked to buy their business. They agreed to sell it to him for $27 million. After that, people paid Ray Kroc to open their own restaurants using the McDonald’s name and menu. Before long, there were McDonald’s restaurants all over the United States, and nowadays, they are all over the world – even in China and Russia. The most successful McDonald’s business is in Hong Kong of China. The Hong Kong McDonald’s sells more hamburgers every day than any other McDonald’s anywhere else in the world.
McDonald’s restaurants are so successful because children love going to them. They like the food, and they like the toys and games they can get at McDonald’s. 47. The McDonald’s brothers offered customers fewer kinds of foods so that
_____.
A. they didn’t need waiters and waitresses B. they could use plastic plates
