★Friendship is needed everywhere in the world. But people in different countries have different ideas about friendship.
Friendship between Americans can be hot and real, but it does not stay long if they move to different places. But both do not feel hurt by this. Both of them may write letters or postcards to each other. Several years later, if the same two people meet again, the friendship between them may go on. Chinese comes more slowly. It may last lifelong, and sometimes it goes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to welcome their friends at home. They will be happy if their friends share holidays or their home life with them. It is not good to say no to them. They receive friends warmly even in their everyday life, but Americans don't show a high politeness, if it needs a lot of time.
A Chinese often spends much time waiting for a friend, even in the middle of night. But Americans don't like to take much time to meet friends. Only when their friends arrive at their homes, the welcome becomes warm and real.
★Today the word friendship has been used so often that it has lost its meaning. Some jokingly or seriously say that friends are made to be used. It makes me very sad.
True friendship doesn't mean that when you need your friend's help, you will treat him to dinner, and when you have to protect yourself, you will put your friends in a difficult situation. In fact, true friendship is the communication and understanding of the hearts.
True friendship is like water. Compared with decent wine, water is tasteless, but is of great help when we are thirsty. True friends don't need to be with each other every day, but are connected in heart every minute.
True friendship is like medicine. Though it is bitter, it cures your illness. True friends give you some suggestions even if they know you would not take. They criticize you when others have a good word for you, not because of envy but worrying that you may lose your cool head.
True friendship has nothing to do with fame, power or money. True friends would often watch you silently far away when you are influential, but come to you whenever you need their help. You're not his steppingstone to success, but are his crutch(依靠) to live through difficulties.
True friends make you complete. Many persons go along with you through your life—your parents, your spouse(配偶), and your children, who take care of you and make your life happy. However, you still need someone who understands your thoughts and souls. Without them, you are likely to be unhealthy in spirit.
True friends stay in your heart, rather than at your side; they know you more than yourself, and try to better you.
Once you have found such a true friend, do treasure(珍惜) him. If your true friend disappears, how can you make the sound of your heart understood?
◆True friendship
Friends are very important in people's life. No one can live alone in the world without friends. I think it's easy to make friends with other people and build a friendship between each other. However, it is not easy to get true friendship, I think.
So what is true friendship? In my opinion, true friendship includes：
First of all, true friends must treat their friends loyally(忠诚地) and help each other. In other words, you must not take advantage of(利用) your friends, and you mustn't cheat them. For example, some unfriendly people make friends in order to cheat money and feelings, or get a certain secret and so on. I don't think these are true friendship.
Second, true friends must try their best to help each other. For example, if a friend is really in need of money to escape from some troubles, true friends will offer help.
Third, true friends must share their happiness and sadness. One of the greatest men once said, “If you tell your happiness to your friend, you will get double happiness. If you tell your sadness to your friend, you will get half.”
