1.Scope*
1.1General—Thisspecificationcoversdeformedandplainlow-alloysteelbarsincutlengthsorcoilsforconcretereinforcementintendedforapplicationswhererestrictiveme-chanicalpropertiesandchemicalcompositionarerequiredforcompatibilitywithcontrolledtensilepropertyapplicationsortoenhanceweldability.ThestandardsizesanddimensionsofdeformedbarsandtheirnumberdesignationsaregiveninTable1.Thetextofthisspecificationreferencesnotesandfootnotesthatprovideexplanatorymaterial.Thesenotesandfootnotes,excludingthoseintablesandfigures,shallnotbeconsideredasrequirementsofthisspecification.
1.2Grade—Barsareofasingleminimumyieldstrengthlevel:namely,60000psi[420MPa],designatedasGrade60[420].
1.3Plainrounds,insizesuptoandincluding2in.[50.8mm]indiameterincoilsorcutlengths,whenordered,shallbefurnishedunderthisspecification.Forductilityproperties(elongationandbending),testprovisionsofthenearestsmallernominaldiameterdeformedbarsizeshallapply.
1.4ControlledTensileProperties—Thisspecificationlimitsmechanicalproperties(Table2)toprovidethedesiredyield/tensilepropertiesforcontrolledtensilepropertyapplications.1.5Welding—Thisspecificationlimitschemicalcomposi-tion(6.2)andcarbonequivalent(6.4)toenhancetheweldabil-ityofthematerial.Whensteelistobewelded,aweldingproceduresuitableforthechemicalcompositionandintendeduseorserviceshouldbeused.TheuseofthelatesteditionofANSI/AWSD1.4isrecommended.Thisdocumentdescribestheproperselectionofthefillermetals,preheat/interpasstemperatures,aswellas,performanceandprocedurequalifi-cationrequirements.

7.RequirementsforDeformations
7.1Deformationsshallbespacedalongthebaratsubstan-tiallyuniformdistances.Thedeformationsonoppositesidesofthebarshallbesimilarinsize,shape,andpattern.
7.2Thedeformationsshallbeplacedwithrespecttotheaxisofthebarsothattheincludedangleisnotlessthan45°.Wherethelineofdeformationsformsanincludedanglewiththeaxisofthebarfrom45to70°,inclusive,thedeformationsshallreversealternatelyindirectiononeachside,orthoseononesideshallbereversedindirectionfromthoseontheoppositeside.Wherethelineofdeformationisover70°,areversalindirectionshallnotberequired.
7.3Theaveragespacingordistancebetweendeformationsoneachsideofthebarshallnotexceed7⁄10ofthenominaldiameterofthebar.
7.4Theoveralllengthofdeformationsshallbesuchthatthegap(measuredasachord)betweentheendsofthedeforma-tionsonoppositesidesofthebarshallnotexceed12.5%ofthenominalperimeterofthebar.Wheretheendsterminateinalongitudinalrib,thewidthofthelongitudinalribshallbeconsideredthegap.Wheremorethantwolongitudinalribsareinvolved,thetotalwidthofalllongitudinalribsshallnotexceed25%ofthenominalperimeterofthebar.Furthermore,thesummationofgapsshallnotexceed25%ofthenominalperimeterofthebar.Thenominalperimeterofthebarshallbe3.1416timesthenominaldiameter.
7.5Thespacing,height,andgapofdeformationsshallconformtotherequirementsprescribedinTable1.
8.MeasurementsofDeformations
8.1Theaveragespacingofdeformationsshallbedeter-minedbymeasuringthelengthofaminimumof10spacesanddividingthatlengthbythenumberofspacesincludedinthemeasurement.Themeasurementshallbeginfromapointonadeformationatthebeginningofthefirstspacetoacorrespond-ingpointonadeformationafterthelastincludedspace.Spacingmeasurementsshallnotbemadeoverabarareacontainingbarmarkingsymbolsinvolvinglettersornumbers.8.2Theaverageheightofdeformationsshallbedeterminedfrommeasurementsmadeonnotlessthantwotypicaldefor-mations.Determinationsshallbebasedonthreemeasurementsperdeformation,oneatthecenteroftheoveralllengthandtheothertwoatthequarterpointsoftheoveralllength.
8.3Insufficientheight,insufficientcircumferentialcover-age,orexcessivespacingofdeformationsshallnotconstitutecauseforrejectionunlessithasbeenclearlyestablishedbydeterminationsoneachlot(seeNote1)testedthattypicaldeformationheight,gap,orspacingdonotconformtotheminimumrequirementsprescribedinSection7.Norejectionshallbemadeonthebasisofmeasurementsiffewerthantenadjacentdeformationsoneachsideofthebararemeasured.

9.MechanicalRequirements9.1TensileProperties:
9.1.1Thematerial,asrepresentedbythetestspecimens,shallconformtotherequirementsfortensilepropertiespre-scribedinTable2.Theyieldstrengthoryieldpointshallbedeterminedbyoneofthefollowingmethods:
9.1.1.1ExtensionunderloadusinganautographicdiagrammethodoranextensometerasdescribedinTestMethodsandDefinitionsA370.However,theextensionunderloadshallbe0.0035in./in.[0.0035mm/mm](0.35%).Whenmaterialisfurnishedincoils,thetestsampleshallbestraightenedpriortoplacingitinthejawsofthetensilemachine(seeNote2).Straighteningshallbedonecarefullytoavoidtheformationoflocalsharpbendsandtominimizecoldwork.Insufficientstraighteningpriortoattachingtheextensometercanresultinlower-than-actualyieldstrengthreadings.
9.1.1.2Bythedropofthebeamorhaltinthegageofthetestingmachine,wherethesteeltestedhasasharp-kneedorwell-definedtypeofyieldpoint.
9.1.2ThepercentageofelongationshallbeasprescribedinTable2.
NOTE2—Straighteningshouldbedonecarefullytoavoidtheformationoflocalsharpbendsandtominimizecoldwork.Insufficientstraighteningpriortoattachingtheextensometercanresultinlower-than-actualyieldstrengthreadings.
9.2BendingProperties:
9.2.1Thebendtestspecimenshallwithstandbeingbentaroundapinwithoutcrackingontheoutsideradiusofthebentportion.TherequirementsfordegreeofbendingandsizesofpinsareprescribedinTable3.Whenmaterialisfurnishedincoils,thetestsampleshallbestraightenedpriortoplacingitinthebendtester.
9.2.2Thebendtestshallbemadeonspecimensofsufficientlengthtoensurefreebendingandwithapparatusthatprovides:9.2.2.1Continuousanduniformapplicationofforcethroughoutthedurationofthebendingoperation,
9.2.2.2Unrestrictedmovementofthespecimenatpointsofcontactwiththeapparatusandbendingaroundapinfreetorotate,
9.2.2.3Closewrappingofthespecimenaroundthepinduringthebendingoperation.9.3TestSpecimens:
9.3.1Thetensiontestspecimensshallbethefullsectionofthebarasrolled.Theunitstressdeterminationshallbebasedonthenominalbararea.

10.1Deformedreinforcingbarsshallbeevaluatedonthebasisofnominalweight[mass].Theweigh[mass]determinedusingthemeasuredweight[mass]ofthetestspecimenandroundinginaccordancewithPracticeE29,shallbeatleast94%oftheapplicableweight[mass]perunitlengthprescribedinTable1.Innocaseshalloverweight[excessmass]ofanydeformedbarbecauseforrejection.Weight[mass]variation

11.1Thebarsshallbefreeofdetrimentalsurfaceimperfec-tions.
11.2Rust,seams,surfaceirregularities,ormillscaleshallnotbecauseforrejection,providedtheweight,dimensions,cross-sectionalarea,andtensilepropertiesofahandwirebrushedtestspecimenarenotlessthantherequirementsofthisspecification.
11.3Surfaceimperfectionsorflawsotherthanthosespeci-fiedin11.2shallbeconsidereddetrimentalwhenspecimenscontainingsuchimperfectionsfailtoconformtoeithertensileorbendingrequirements.Examplesinclude,butarenotlimitedto,laps,seams,scabs,slivers,coolingorcastingcracks,andmillorguidemarks.
NOTE3—Reinforcingbarintendedforepoxycoatingapplicationsshouldhavesurfaceswithaminimumofsharpedgestoachievepropercover.Particularattentionshouldbegiventobarmarksanddeformationswherecoatingdifficultiesarepronetooccur.
NOTE4—Deformedbarsdestinedtobemechanically-splicedorbutt-weldedmayrequireacertaindegreeofroundnessinorderforthesplicestoadequatelyachievestrengthrequirements.
12.NumberofTestsandRetests
12.1AllmechanicaltestsshallbeconductedinaccordancewithTestMethodsandDefinitionsA370includingAnnexA9.12.2NumberofTests—Onetensiontest,onebendtest,andonesetofdimensionalpropertytestsincludingbarweight[mass]andspacing,height,andgapofdeformationsshallbemadeofeachbarsizerolledfromaheat.12.3Retests:
12.3.1Ifanytensilepropertyofanytensiontestspecimenislessthanthatspecified,andanypartofthefractureisoutsidethemiddlethirdofthegagelength,asindicatedbyscribescratchesmarkedonthespecimenbeforetesting,aretestshallbeallowed.
12.3.2Iftheresultsofanoriginaltensionspecimenfailtomeetthespecifiedminimumrequirementsandarewithin2000psi[14MPa]oftherequiredtensilestrength,within1000psi[7MPa]oftherequiredyieldpoint,orwithintwopercentageunitsoftherequiredelongation,aretestshallbepermittedontworandomspecimensforeachoriginaltensionspecimenfailurefromthelot.Bothretestspecimensshallmeettherequirementsofthisspecification.
12.3.3Ifabendtestfailsforreasonsotherthanmechanicalreasonsorflawsinthespecimenasdescribedin12.3.5and12.3.6,aretestshallbepermittedontworandomspecimensfromthesamelot.Bothretestspecimensshallmeettherequirementsofthisspecification.Theretestshallbeper-formedontestspecimensthatareatairtemperaturebutnotlessthan60°F[16°C].
12.3.4Ifaweight[mass]testfailsforreasonsotherthanflawsinthespecimenasdescribedin12.3.6,aretestshallbe
permittedontworandomspecimensfromthesamelot.Bothretestspecimensshallmeettherequirementsofthisspecifica-tion.
12.3.5Ifanytestspecimenfailsbecauseofmechanicalreasonssuchasfailureoftestingequipmentorimproperspecimenpreparation,testingofareplacementspecimenshallbepermitted.
12.3.6Ifflawsaredetectedinatestspecimen,eitherbeforeorduringtheperformanceofthetest,testingofareplacementspecimenshallbepermittedfromthesameheatandbarsizeastheoriginal.
13.TestReports
13.1Thefollowinginformationshallbereportedonaperheatbasis.Reportadditionalitemsasrequestedordesired.13.1.1Chemicalanalysisincludingcarbon,manganese,phosphorous,sulfur,silicon,copper,nickel,chromium,molyb-denum,andvanadium.
13.1.2Carbonequivalentinaccordancewith6.4.13.1.3Tensileproperties.13.1.4Bendtest.
13.2AMaterialTestReport,CertificateofInspection,orsimilardocumentprintedfromorusedinelectronicformfromanelectronicdatainterchange(EDI)transmissionshallberegardedashavingthesamevalidityasacounterpartprintedinthecertifier’sfacility.ThecontentoftheEDItransmitteddocumentmustmeettherequirementsoftheinvokedASTMstandard(s)andconformtoanyEDIagreementbetweenthepurchaserandthesupplier.Notwithstandingtheabsenceofasignature,theorganizationsubmittingtheEDItransmissionisresponsibleforthecontentofthereport.

14.Inspection
14.1Theinspectorrepresentingthepurchasershallhavefreeentry,atalltimeswhileworkonthecontractofthepurchaserisbeingperformed,toallpartsofthemanufacturer’sworksthatconcernthemanufactureofthematerialordered.Themanufacturershallaffordtheinspectorallreasonablefacilitiestosatisfytheinspectorthatthematerialisbeingfurnishedinaccordancewiththisspecification.Alltests(exceptproduct(check)analysis)andinspectionshallbemadeattheplaceofmanufacturepriortoshipment,unlessotherwisespecified,andshallbesoconductedsoasnottointerfereunnecessarilywiththeoperationoftheworks.
14.2ForGovernmentProcurementOnly—Exceptasother-wisespecifiedinthecontract,thecontractorshallberespon-siblefortheperformanceofallinspectionandtestrequire-mentsspecifiedhereinandshallbepermittedtouseone’sownoranyothersuitablefacilitiesfortheperformanceoftheinspectionandtestrequirementsspecifiedherein,unlessdis-approvedbythepurchaseratthetimeofpurchase.Thepurchasershallhavetherighttoperformanyoftheinspectionsandtestsatthesamefrequencyassetforthinthisspecificationwheresuchinspectionsaredeemedneccesarytoassurethatmaterialconformstoprescribedrequirements.
15.Rejection
15.1Unlessotherwisespecified,anyrejectionbasedontestsmadeinaccordancewith6.5shallbereportedtothemanufac-turerwithinfiveworkingdaysfromthereceiptofsamplesbythepurchaser.
16.Marking
16.1Whenloadedformillshipment,barsshallbeproperlyseparatedandtaggedwiththemanufacturer’sheatortestidentificationnumber.
16.2Eachmanufacturershallidentifythesymbolsofhismarkingsystem.
16.3Allbarsproducedtothisspecification,exceptplainroundbars,shallbeidentifiedbyadistinguishingsetofmarkslegiblyrolledontothesurfaceofonesideofthebartodenoteinthefollowingorder:
16.3.1PointofOrigin—Letterorsymbolestablishedasthemanufacturer’smilldesignation.
